As a graduate, I wore my Glasgow University tartan, which is my favorite. Based on our school crest:

I have a number of familial tartans I could wear, but the Glasgow Uni and Glasgow City are my favorites.

Clans are really larger/broader than families as such, thought the sense of shared ancestry is certainly a large part of it.

Septs are other family groups that gave allegiance to a clan chief (or who lived on land belonging to the chief) and thus came under the umbrella/protection of the clan.
