Day 4: Preference
I ended-up crashing on Audrey’s futon that night. My roommate was gone when I went back to my room, but her boyfriend was still there. And since he made me feel uneasy, Audrey offered to let me sleepover that night. The next morning Audrey and I got ready together again (I helped her straighten her hair and she helped to curl mine). The dress code for the day was a cocktail or sundress. My dress was black and pink (it’s hard to explain, but it was really cute. I wore it to homecoming that year as well) and I wore black flats even though I knew heals would look better (I had learned my lesson the day before). At the appropriate time, we left for the student center to meet our Rho Gamma. I smiled as I looked at my schedule: Trouble, Candy Land. I was so excited to have my top choices but I knew I would have a hard decision to make when I filled out my preference card.
I looked over at Audrey. She was smiling, but she looked uneasy again. She showed me her schedule: Pretty, Pretty Princess, Candy Land. She told me she felt guilty for still having my favorite when I didn’t. I told her I was still really happy with my schedule and she relaxed. We hugged good-bye and promised to sit next to each other on the bus ride over to Candy Land.
At Trouble, I was met by Elizabeth, the legacy who I talked to several times during recruitment. She led me to the dining room where I got a small plate of food and then we moved over to the living room and chatted on a couch. She gave me a letter telling me how much she enjoyed getting to meet me this week and how she thought I could be an asset to Trouble. We continued to talk about our families and she made sure to point out how wonderful it was to be sisters with her mother and grandmother. She then led me to the chapter room for part of their ceremony. I even started to cry a little (I had borrowed Audrey’s real waterproof mascara this time so I didn’t have to worry about looking like a mess). As I was leaving Trouble, Elizabeth came up and gave me a hug and said she couldn’t wait to see me again. I left with a smile on my face.
I met Audrey on the bus but she wouldn’t tell me how the party had gone at Pretty, Pretty Princess. She didn’t look like she had been crying though. When we arrived at the house, the inside was even more beautiful than it had been the day before. I was greeted by Grace and Audrey was greeted by Katherine. The two of them led us to the dining room for more food and then hugged each other before Katherine led Audrey into the living room and Grace led me upstairs to her bedroom. She also had written me a letter but instead of it being a serious letter saying ‘you could be an asset here,’ she had written jokes and memories from the previous days and ended it by saying “regardless of where you go tonight, I hope we can be become friends.” Then she led me down to the chapter room for the ceremony and I started to cry really hard. These girls were so awesome and I knew I wanted to be a part of them too. Then I looked next to me and saw my roommate. How could these amazing girls want her? My tears of joy quickly turned to tears on anger. I felt so at home at Candy Land, but I had barely survived one month living with my roommate, how could I survive four years with her?
