so...bump???

I didn't hear anything about any riots, so I guess they're okay.(the residents, I mean. I don't give a crap about westboro.)

Even if the protesters are awful people, I don't know that I've heard of a community reacting violently to them. People are usually pretty well-behaved, and try not to give these groups more attention than is necessary.

I'm from Long Island, but being away at school I've only actually heard about it through GC. My father works in the Great Neck/Kings Point area; he never mentioned anything about it though. I would assume they were largely ignored.

Describing Westboro Baptist as an "Anti-Jewish Hate Group" is like describing the plot of the first Godzilla movie as "Tall Foreigner visits Japan". Accurate, but in many, many ways insufficient. :)

The title field can only hold so many characters. :)

The protests pretty much fizzled out. There was a bit of counter-protesting, but that was all. Article from Newsday.

I still don't even get what they were protesting this time. Just being Jewish in general? Or was it some specific thing?

They were pretty aggressive at the Virginia Tech memorial, and actually crossed the street a few times. Luckily, it didn't get physichal.

That is why my earlier suggestion about bringing hard ass JDL types along. I'm not saying violence is always the answer, but I am saying that when violence is the answer, it's the only answer. And when someone says that someone else's religion should be wiped off the planent, that is usually a precrussor to violence. That could almost be construed as a threat.

These people are scary.

It is difficult to teach tolerance and acceptance when there's an understanding of "to dos" and "not to dos" to get into the Kingdom. So, it should come as no surprise when zealots get a hold of all of these religions and their texts to suit exclusionary purposes.

There is a difference between a lack of tolerance and teaching about sin. True Christians know that you tolerate everyone, but sin is sin.

Westboro comes down here every so often. My feeling is that it's best to ignore these goobers. The only way they exist is for us to validate them by continuing to comment on their existence. I think the first few times they came to OKC, I was outraged, angry, etc. Since they're not going away, I figure the next best thing to do is to pretend they don't exist. They'll probably never actually do anything besides act like buffoons. They have zero political clout, so who really cares what they say or do?

They thrive on people reacting to them. The best thing to do is ingore.

Besides, isn't Westboro just that old dude and like 3 of his kids anyway?

There is no difference between teaching about some of the "sins" that many "Christians" consider to be "sins" (based on their interpretation of Scripture) and being intolerant. And notice I said "to dos" and "not to dos," which is not exclusive to "sin."

"True Christian."
