If your prof will let you attend another section, that would be the ideal solution. I completely understand not wanting to miss any parties because you've got lots of 'em to attend.

For the most part, no one's telling you what to do or not to do - just to be sure that you won't get kicked out of rush if you do skip class. Some schools will release you automatically. Check with the Greek life office and see if this is the case, and if so, make SURE that if you do get the option to attend another section that your professor writes you a note so you can let Panhel know.

This is one of the myriad reasons why night classes blow chunks.

Good. All we did was offer different perspectives. You can take them or leave them.

And most of us have graduated from college, so we know that the "experience" is important. But college is for your education.

To me, it seems that if Greek life would penalize a PNM for skipping class during recruitment, then they should offer a suitable accommodation. If PNMs are being penalized (dropped from houses) for going to class, I question the Council's committment to academics. I understand scholarship is important to all GLOs which is why I don't understand why such a system encourages students to skip class.

It doesn't. If you're interested in rushing, you should plan ahead and not schedule night classes the semester you're going to rush. I realize sometimes they're unavoidable, though.

I understand why panhellenics adopt the rule that you'll be dropped if you skip class for rush. That being said, in the absence of that rule, it's perfectly possible to skip class for an activity that matters to you and still have academics as priority #1. Skipping one Wednesday night lecture for rush doesn't mean greek life outranks academics for you. If just means that it outranks this one lecture for you.

:-) my point exactly.
i'm still not happy about missing class...but that's why I decided to compromise.
It is sad that our school doesn't offer accommodation, but with a rush that is already nearly 2 weeks long just to fit everything in, I understand how that would be hard.

I think you're being very wise and mature about this situation. As a pretty recent alum, I remember situations like this where during our selection process we were told "so and so had class, etc. and couldn't return for philanthropy night" but we still had to vote on them...and honestly, when you meet so many people and you don't remember who is who and you have to cut someone, sometimes its the girl you just didn't see around that night, even if it wasn't her fault.

That said, you pay for school and it's important...but school is for four years, and your sorority is for life. I 100% promise that missing one class your freshman year isn't going to matter on graduation day. But when you're standing in your caps and gowns surrounded by sisters, that will matter.

Anyway. That's just my two cents.

Yeah, at a huge school like Penn State, it's probably pretty hard if you're a freshman. Unless you're lucky enough to get an early orientation spot where you can sign up for a good schedule. With so many budget cuts and cut backs on class sections, the only open spots are sometimes the crappy (i.e., night) classes.

It's been a long time since I went through rush (it was called rush, and there were no sororitites in East Halls), but I think you made exactly the right call - split the difference.

My only word of advice, from someone who still has blisters from wearing Candies from Ritner to Cooper and back to Wolf, is to keep a pair of flip-flops or other comfy shoes in your purse. All that walking is BRUTAL.

Enjoy the most grueling recruitment in America, and I hope you'll post your experiences here (discreetly, of course).

Downside to PSU recruitment: Too damned many parties
Upside to PSU recruitment: Lots of excellent choices!

Missing one class or missing out on a lifetime of memories and experiences of sisterhood? I think I can miss one class.

I see - I didn't understand that there was more than one section of the class in question. If you could attend a different section once, so that you don't have to miss part of open houses - there you go.

nittanygirl 08-28-2009 10:06 AM

I'm still pretty torn but about it all but I believe it is the best I can do for now.
& LionTamer, they have moved the sororities back out of East Halls this year (it would have been brutal to walk that)
