My own husband, a fellow 80s child, gave me a blank stare when I mentioned John Hughes. *sigh*

You are now officially forbidden to go to your hairdresser. :p

Bethany Sloane: May I ask what brought you here?
Jay: Some fuck named John Hughes.
Bethany Sloane: "Sixteen Candles" John Hughes?
Jay: You know that guy, too? That fuckin' guy. He made this flick "Sixteen Candles." Not bad. There's tits in it, but no bush, but Ebert over here don't give a shit about that kind of thing 'cause he's, like, all in love with this John Hughes guy. He goes out and rents, like, every one of his movies. Fuckin' "Breakfast Club," where all these stupid kids actually show up for detention. Fuckin' "Weird Science," where this chick wants to take her gear off and get down, but oh no, she don't 'cause it's a PG movie. And then, "Pretty in Pink," which I can't even watch with this tubby bitch anymore, 'cause every time we get to the part where the redhead hooks up with her dream guy, he starts sobbin' like a little bitch with a skinned knee and shit. And there's nothing worse than watchin' a fuckin' fat man weep.

Yep. I have no idea why it double-posted.

But if you need me to say it again, sweetie, I'll be glad to.:p

I think a lot of people just don't pay attention to who the writer/producer/director is. If you name the movies, they know those for sure.

So many of his movies transcend generations, especially The Breakfast Club. That was a movie that everybody could relate to in some way and now my daughter and her friends love it and can relate to it also.

But aren't they known as "John Hughes Movies" or "Brat Pack Movies"? I just can't get my head around it.

I work next to the Sears Tower, and every day I go to work I think of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It was the first movie I ever owned on DVD - I got it and the Goonies the same day. My dad quotes from that movie like it's his job. I can't imagine not knowing it was a John Hughes movie.

And I'm only 25 - so the only movies that actually came out while I was watching movies were the Home Alone and newer. I watched most John Hughes movies on TBS.

I have to go with AGDee. I rarely keep up with directors and executive producers, but I know the names of the movies and the characters I loved. I was listening to the radio this morning and was like  when they announced his passing. Then, they started naming movies, and my face changed to :(.

I can watch "The Breakfast Club", "Sixteen Candles", "Weird Science", and "Pretty in Pink" anytime they're on TV. Don't hate me, but I've never seen every minute of "Ferris Bueler's Day Off", but I recognize it's hilarious genius also.

This is truly the saddest summer I've had in recent memory. Too many losses.

MysticCat 08-07-2009 08:39 AM

I didn't realize until listening to the news this morning that J Hughes wrote the screenplay for Vacation; it was inspired by his resentment that when he was a child the family never went to Disneyland.

How many of you gals are waiting for their Jake Ryan moment? I admit it--I am.

I feel like the 80's are dying this summer! I swear, if anything happens to the members of Duran Duran, I am going to completely lose it.

Oh, and I'm still waiting for my Jake Ryan moment.

33girl 08-07-2009 11:29 AM

My friends and I are totally planning on going to Eastern PA and stalking Michael Schoeffling (aka Jake Ryan).
