-   -   Are you disappointed with this summer's batch of movies? (https://greekchat.com/gcforums/showthread.php?t=106310)

I'm a sucker every year for the summer movies and EVERY year I am disappointed! The only great movie this year has been UP. I laughed at Bruno, but it was completely over the top, poorly designed and overshadowed by Borat. I won't even go see Transformers 2, even though I liked the first. Harry Potter was a nice change from the rest of the series with a little imagination and whimsy from the books finally injected into the usually flat movies. GI Joe looks terrible...seriously Channing Tatum? Oh...maybe this is heresy, but Star Trek was stupid! Can you just parade one old character after another to say hello and call it a script?

Why are they doing this? Such an unnecessary venture. It looked kind of Matrixy. And Marlon Wayans? Why?

Same reason why they did Transformers, Underdog, any comic book, and plans for the Smurfs, Hong Kong Phooey, Voltron and a few others....some brilliant mind thinks that it's a great idea to take all of these classics and turning into a live action/CGI suckfest.

It also goes to show how little originality is left in Hollywood when it comes to making something new.

And the Asian flicks haven't been any better this year either...nothing really new or eye catching has dropped yet unless you list Ong Bak II.

Just because computers can do extraordinary things nowadays, it doesn't mean they have to create/enhance every last aspect of a movie.

And if you want my idea of some good summer blockbusters over the years... how about 'The Sixth Sense', 'Forrest Gump', and 'Jurassic Park' (another one that will never get old for me). And a few older ones, some of which came out a few summers before I was born... 'Top Gun', 'Jaws', 'ET', 'Back to the Future'...

I remember watching all of those in the theater. (Except Jaws - too scary!) So, unfortunately, statements like that make me feel old. :( I remember Top Gun most - I saw it with my uncle, an aeronautical engineer who, after the movie, talked at length to me and my brother about F-5s, fictitious MiG 28s, inverted dives and the like. That will always be one of my favorite movies. (This is the script from one of my favorite scenes from any movie ever.)

I'm seeing Harry Potter tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it, but I never expect to like the movies nearly as much as the books. Since spoiler fonting isn't as practiced as it needs to be, I know more about this movie than I've ever known about the previous HP flicks (before watching it). So even though I'm looking forward to it, I know some of the things that will let me down. This might actually help me like the movie more. We'll see.

Angels and Demons was just ok for me. Again, the book was much better.

Transformers was a good 'escape' movie. It's nice to have something every now and then that doesn't require much work to enjoy.

Up was great. My kids loved it and so did hubby and I. Best movie this summer so far, IMO.

Both movies are really good, especially Pelham 123. When school is in session I don't get a chance to go as much as I would like to. The only thing I don't like about DVDs is I miss out on the big screen and the great sound.

Oh, and the "movie popcorn" too.:p

An LCD widescreen and surround would help.

Plus every great movie needs some strong black stereotyping. Just look at Transformers 2!

I'm only disappointed that I haven't gotten to see a lot of the movies I wanted to see. Pelham 123, Angels and Demons and Public Enemies all look like movies I'd want to see on the big screen. Just not enough time or money...

I try to go to the matinee when I do go, but the prices at the concession stands are too high.

That's why you sneak stuff in.

At the theater I like best, it's actually cheapest to go to the shows that start between 4 pm and 6 pm, which is cool

Saw Public Enemies yesterday...it was pretty cool.

I've been generally happy with all the movies, but still wonder why they don't use the Tranformer theme music for the films?

I saw a preview this weekend for a movie I'll definitely want to see: The Time Traveler's Wife. It looks like a love story and it has Rachel McAdams, who is a favorite of mine ever since The Notebook. It comes out August 14th.
