The point is, however, you are being forced to do things that AREN'T part of your office (like maintain order in meetings). That is the job of the parliamentarian and president working together - NOT the standards chair.

The points system needs to have a consequence - such as, if you don't accumulate however many positive points you aren't allowed to attend the formal or social functions.

If people are blowing off events that have been approved and voted on by the chapter on a regular basis, they need to be brought in front of the standards board and informed that their membership is in jeopardy.

I held this position for two years when I was in school, and I was the soft-spoken one who didn't want people to hate me. But eventually, you learn to deal with it. And honestly, they don't hate you... they just don't like getting in trouble.

If the girl who had the position last year didn't do anything, then naturally it's going to make your job even harder. Everyone is used to breaking the rules and getting away with it. You have to be tough and don't back down.

When I had to tell someone they were in poor standing, I had girls who wouldn't talk to me for a couple days. These were usually the people who were consistently being talked to for the same thing, and in the long run, they got very little out of being Greek as compared to other members. If they were going to be mad because they couldn't send an email saying, "I won't be there because of this reason," or because they didn't raise any money for a fundraiser, or because they showed up 45 minutes late to an event without telling anyone, then I wasn't going to feel bad for them. There were people who slipped up once in a blue moon, and I would be a little more lenient if I was able to. These were the people who, once they knew they screwed up, were very apologetic. The people who get mad are usually the ones who are just angry because they couldn't get away with something.

Give it some time before you completely freak out about everyone being mad at you, because I'm sure that's not the case. It will just take some time for everyone to get used to someone actually performing this job correctly. My chapter had to do it when I first got the position, and eventually it was fine.

And if no one reads your by-laws during meetings, maybe you should start. Constantly reminding everyone of the rules of your chapter will make it a little easier when it comes to enforcing them. No one can use the excuse, "But I didn't know.."

Lovies are when you build groups of 3 girls that normally don't hang out with eachother, and they have to do something together, either plan an event, or hang out. Often times they hang out cause we dont have THAT meny events. But, basically, you put three girls from different cliques together and they go do something like dinner, or bowling, or just chill and watch TV together. It helps break up the cliqus and make everything run smoother cause you're actually FRIENDS with more girls, and not just sisters who wear the same letters. You find you have more in common with girls that you never knew. Or you learn cool things about them. Like, I knew a girl for over a year.... never knew her parents were from germany, and she's the only one in her family not born in germany. Made me realize why certain things were important. Anyway.... It helps girls break the ice with newer members, and relieve tension if there was a problem in the past, they can get over it now and just hang out. It helps.
