Excuse me AEPhiAlum, as a sister (to you), mother and weather weenie I must express my grave exception to your assertion that Floridians and Californians are weenies...50 degrees is COLD. We dress in layers here is SoCal. I remember once in the valley when it SNOWED...and one night when it was 37 degrees outside. My dogs refused to go outside...we refused to go outside. And today...IT RAINED (must be read with a definite whine). :)

LOL I remember when my aunt moved to Florida and then a year later asked us to send her her fur coats. We're up in Ohio and we just about died laughing, it was about 20 here and 60 there!

Now, now, I never said "weenie". :p

You get used to the climate you live in. I grew up in the Northeast (and I still live there), so, to me, 50 degrees is sweater weather - but someone used to a warmer climate might be wanting a jacket.

As long as you don't do something stupid, like go out in below-freezing weather in a t-shirt and shorts and with your hair still wet... to each their own - dress so you're comfortable.

OK, I think I've hijacked poor I<3Starbucks' rush thread quite enough. :p So I'll add a couple of practical cold-weather ideas for her and other IU PNMs (and anyone venturing out in the cold):

- Moisturizer and Chapstick are your best friends. Get some moisturizing lipstick to wear during recruitment.
- If there's snow on the ground and it's sunny out, wear sunglasses. Snow has a nasty habit of reflecting sunlight.
- You can lose a lot of heat through your head, so keep it covered. I have a pashmina shawl that I use to cover my head when I want to avoid "hat hair".

If it's going to be really cold and you'll be outside for awhile find some hot hands http://www.heatmax.com/HotHands/index.htm that's their website and you can probably find them at drugstores, though I'm not sure because we buy ours at Costco in bulk. I have two horses so I spend a lot of time outside in the cold and they work great! There are also feet warmers but those aren't as good.

It is currently below 0 where I live. Not really that big of a deal because I lead a rugged lifestyle (my heat is set at 45). However my advice to you is wear practical shoes and change into cute shoes when you get to the next party.

My favorite item for when it is icy and gross are these fabulous inventions called yaktrax, STABILicers, or get-a-grips. If you can't find them at a sporting goods store you can definitely find them at rei.com Some you can even wear on regular shoes and take off when you go indoors, just have a ziploc bag handy to keep them in.

They really work? I had a pair of yaktrax in my hot little hands, and had never heard of anyone who could vouch for them. After that marvelous casserole recipe, I would believe anything you say... almost! ;) If they work, I would like to recommend them to my clients, too - there are WAY too many broken hips in the winter!

That said, I'm supposed to go to Chicago right after New Years. It better be at least a little bit warmer, none of this below zero nonsense!!

I think which brand/style works best depends on the shoe and the gait of the wearer as well as the snow. It is pretty dry here so the snow tends to glaciate and get icy, so they work well. However when it dumped big time fluffy stuff (about a foot) in the past couple days they weren't as useful unless there was ice underneath. I had a pair of yaktrax where one part snapped, so I got a different brand with spikes I could replace, and then we got yaktrax through work. A lot of environmental health and safety offices have them for winter.

As a fellow Idahoan, I *lol*ed at yaktrax. Best invention ever. I haven't been on my ass in two winters now!! (Except when skiing of course...)

I just wanted to let everyone know that I just got my bid. I've had a rush filled with ups and downs, so i was nervous to do updates! But, i'm sooo happy with my house, and here they all are! :)
