Is there a way for a potential member to research a campus chapter without being indiscreet?

When you do research you go to the events that they are hosting, you basically be where they are. Get to know the members but not on a fake I am just gettign to know you so I can get your letters, but REALLY know them. It is true you shouldn't just walk into a chapter you know nothing about. If it is at all possible you should st least know of and be at the events that they are sponsoring.
