When I answered this last night, I truly believed and meant what I said and stand behind it tonight.

However, after learning more about this Gentleman, I had another thought:
Perhaps this was his "Book". Perhaps he survived all the trials and tribulations he went through in life just for this event. That he was meant to be at that place at that time.

On a whole different note, the following is an updated link to what the Op-Ed Professional Cartoonists are drawing about this. Please note that some are very touching, some will make you think, and others are rather political in nature.

Picture on the front page of CNN is totally uncalled for.

I think basically you can mesh the two thoughts together, that after he survived through all his tests and trials, he faced the final test to choose between sacrificing himself to save others, or to live on. He lived his life through those events, and he sees that the lives of these kids are precious for the future. And he chose his final answer at that place at that time...

I agree with you.
One very special man.

 Gah. What is wrong with the media??? Showing pictures and stuff is one thing...but the front page of ALL the sites is 100% uncalled for and just plain out wrong.

At some point if something like this happens again (I pray that it will never happen again....but you never know) I am hoping that the killer leaves a suicide note blaming the media for some of it....maybe they they will wake up and see how wrong they are.

I'm not in journalism, so if anyone is, please correct me if I'm wrong - but everyone (regardless if it's MSN, NBC, CNN, whoever) wants to have the "big story" of the moment for a few reasons: they want to build credibility (as being "THE source for breaking news", which of course equals more viewers which leads to other benefits for them.

(remember when Anna Nicole/Britney's shaved head was on every channel and newspaper?)

They aren't gonna say, "Oh, well, we're CNN, and NBC already has this story because the package was sent to them, so let's post pictures or something else instead."

My point is, they are there to inform us (among other things) which is what their doing. Granted, the news coverage is a bit much - but I think it's because it's such a huge story that has touched so many people.

I definitely agree that it is a lot because like someone else already said "it might make some other nutjob want to go out and top it".

Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there.

I heard that in one report and electrical tape in another. Regardless, this is a shining start in this story. Story of survival - like this show on cable (something like) I should not have lived. This is a true miracle that of all the people to get shot in the femeral (Sp?) artery, it was an eagle scout who knew how to save his own life. I don't mean to be snarky when I say this but I can smell a book deal on this one.

There is nothing like a national tragedy to wipe out the previous news stories ANNA NICOLE WHO, BRITTANY WHO AND (ducks head), DELTA ZETA WHO?

I do fear for the parents - they will never have a full nights rest. They will be bothered in public, people will come to their home and I am sure the press will sit on their lawn for a month. I only heard one thing about them, they own or work in a dry cleaner and they made no statement to the press. Is this all we know? (stayed away from TV due to illness this week but hubby turned on TV at night)

I received word from one of our NPC delegates to wear orange and maroon Friday in memory of those who have been lost, those who are wounded and all the families effected by this horrible tragedy. Since we did not have a chapter at VT, we are amongst the lucky.

SWTXBelle 04-19-2007 09:40 AM

I am a weekly columnist. My column next week will obviously have to be about the tragedy at VT. I discuss the killings at Univ. of Texas in 1966 and the Killeen Luby's massacre of 1996. I never mention the killers, and I make a point at the end that the endless glorification of these animals is wrong. You have to report the news, but you do not have to make media stars of the killers. I end my column with a list of the names we should remember - the victims at UT, Luby's and Va Tech. They are the ones who should be remembered - the unborn child and the woman killed trying to help her stricken fiance in Austin, the couple who had just celebrated their 47th anniversary in Killeen, the Eagle Scout who kept his cool, the professor who sacrificed his life for his students, the Pi Phi who was injured as she went to help her sister -this should be the focus.
And while I hope the parents of this latest killer are safe, I do think it fair to ask - How did they not know their son was in such an awful mental state? I realize the university was in a horrible situation - I know they cannot necessarily contact the parents (when I taught college I could not even give parents their children's grades because of privacy issues) - but I can't help but wonder - as, in all fairness I'm sure they are now - how could they have missed this?

If they were working 24/7 they might not have had the chance.

Dirty Laundry by Don Henley

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something, something I can use
People love it when you lose, they love dirty laundry

Well, I could've been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em all around

We got the bubbleheaded bleach-blonde, comes on at 5
She can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
It's interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet?
You know the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the widow on the set, we need dirty laundry

You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone
Just leave well enough alone, keep your dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they shit , kick 'em all around

Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
Love to cut you down to size, we love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo, we can dance and sing
When it's said and done, we haven't told you a thing
We all know that crap is king, give us dirty laundry
