What did Ray Charles leave in his will? The legendary musician passed away last week from liver cancer. He had been sick for the past year and now his family is preparing for his home-going. Ray donated millions to charity, but he also left millions of dollars in his estate. Ray left behind 12 children, 20 grandchildren, 2 ex-wives and several paternity suits. Sources say if anyone comes forward to contest his will it will hold up any payouts to family members who were left with money. A new Ray Charles album is coming out on August 31st. The album features Ray with Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Johnny Mathis, Elton John and Diana Krall. In October the Ray Charles story comes to the big screen as Jamie Foxx stars in the movie Unchain My Heart.


Author J.L. King is coning to Philly. J.L. is the author of the book On The Down Low: A Journey Into The Lives of Straight Black Men Who Sleep with Men. J.L. appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show a few weeks ago and his book has created quite a stir. Community College of Philadelphia Health and Wellness Center and the Literary Café will cosponsor a presentation and book signing for the AIDS/HIV activist. The program is the kickoff for a series of activities spotlighting “National HIV Testing Week.” The event is Monday June 21st, at Community College of Philadelphia 17th and Spring Garden, Bonnell Building 6:00-8:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase.


According to the centers for Disease Control the AIDS rate among black women is three times higher than Latino women and eighteen times higher than white women. African American women represent 68 percent of new HIV cases and an alarming 1 of out 160 black women carries the virus. This is a healthcare crisis in the African American community and J.L. Michael Jackson’s baby brother Randy is shaking up Michael’s inner circle. During the past week Randy has fired John McClain and Bob Jones two men who have been with Michael for years. Jones has been with Michael since he was 12 years old. He was the Vice President of Communications for MJJ Productions. McClain was the force behind Janet Jackson he was the one who helped to put her on the map. He has been associated with the family for over 25 years. What is Randy doing? Why is he getting rid of longtime Jackson Associates? Sources say he is making all the decisions regarding Michael and he doesn’t want to share the spotlight with anyone. Friends say Jones was particularly upset about his firing, because he never saw it coming. He was one of the few who never signed an agreement of confidentiality so many are wondering will he talk. He has been with Michael through every scandal and marriage. Will he write a tell-all book and expose the real Michael Jackson?


The marriage is over between T-Boz of TLC and rapper Mack 10. T-Boz has filed for divorce claiming her husband cheated on her and threatened to kill her several times. They have a three year old daughter and they have been married since 2000.


Get ready for the reunion of En Vogue. All the funky divas will be together this time including Dawn, Terry, Cindy and Maxine. The reunion will take place next year after Cindy has her baby.


The Godfather of Soul James Brown has pleaded guilty to criminal domestic violence stemming from an incident last January when he attacked his wife. Brown will receive no jail time and he will not have to pay any additional fines, but he will have a conviction on his record.


Justin Timberlake claims he got lucky with Janet Jackson. In an interview with an Australian newspaper he talks about his rumored affair with Ms. Jackson and he says he got lucky. He also said how lovely and beautiful she is. He has not spoken to her since their infamous Super Bowl “malfunction.” Janet was not too pleased with Justin’s comments. She says Justin has changed and he is getting too big for his britches. Janet spoke about Justin in an interview with the Australian Sunday Mail. Janet says he’s changed and is very cocky. Janet says if there was a contest between Usher and Justin Timberlake, Usher would win hands down because he is more talented. She says some people can’t handle success referring to Justin. She also talked about today’s music scene claiming too many of today’s top artists are in it for the money and not for the love of music. Meanwhile Usher is planning a two month tour. There’s no word yet on any Philly dates.

Richard Pryor wants to write another autobiography. Back in 1995, he wrote the book Pryor Convictions about his life, but now Richard says he wants to finish telling the story. He wants to talk about his battle with multiple sclerosis and he says he has more stories to tell that he left out of the first book. Pryor will go down in history as one of the greatest standup comedians of all time. He was born in a brothel in Peoria. He’s been married 8 times and once set himself on fire during a cocaine binge.


Producer Nile Rodgers is working on a new Chic project. Back in the day the group had the hits “I Want Your Love,” “Le Freak” and “Good Times.” Nile is hoping he can get Luther Vandross, who is recovering from a stroke, to contribute some vocals to the project.


On Saturday June 19th, NBC will air Apollo at 70- A Hot Night in Harlem. Denzel Washington, Patti LaBelle, Yolanda Adams, Gerald Levert, Donnie McClurkin and Brian McKnight are scheduled to appear.


Cuba Gooding Jr. won’t be screaming, “Show me the money,” in his new movie because he will be too busy taking his clothes off. Cuba is in town filming the Lee Daniels movie Shadowboxer. The movie is about a murderous mother and stepson duo and Cuba does a striptease the full monty for his stepmom played by Helen Mirren. Filming is taking place in Roxborough and Wissahicken Park.


Former Apprentice star Omarosa is not finished seeking her 15 minutes of fame. Omarosa says she would get buck naked for Playboy Magazine if they gave her $2 million.


Mariah Carey has enlisted Kanye West, R. Kelly and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to help her with a new album. She’s also working on an illustrated children’s book about a bi-racial orphaned girl and she wants to do another movie.


Eddie Murphy is set to star in an updated version of Romeo and Juliet. The story is going to be told from the parents’ perspective. Eddie will be teaming up with the producers of some of his biggest hits Coming to America, Boomerang and The Nutty Professor.


Congratulations to singer Whitney Houston she recently received “The World Artists Lifetime Achievement Award” in Germany.


Denzel Washington and Laurence Fishburne are in talks to do a movie together. Director M. Night Shylamalan (Signs) will direct.


Blair Underwood will be providing the voice of the dad on the Nickelodeon animated series Fatherhood. The show premieres on Fathers Day. He’s also starring in a new NBC series this fall called LAX. Underwood co-stars with Heather Locklear and he’ll play the terminal manager of an airport.


Comedian Dave Chapelle is in talks to play Rick James on the big screen. Dave often pokes fun at James during his comedy show and now he’s going to play him in the movies. The movie is based on James upcoming autobiography Memoirs of a Superfreak.


At the movie it’s Badass starring Mario Van Peebles. The movie is about the making of Melvin Van Peebles classic Sweetback’s badass song. The 1971, classic paved the way for many black films during the 70’s. Mario plays his dad in the movie.


Stevie Wonder’s new album, A Time 2 Love, comes out on July 27th, and Stevie says he will probably go on tour. Let’s hope he comes to Philly. Stevie was recently honored at The Songwriters Hall of Fame.


Maia Campbell opens up in the latest issue of Sister to Sister Magazine. Maia is the daughter of author BeBe Moore Campbell, she also played “Tiffany” on the LL Cool J series In The House. Maia has developed quite a reputation and she talks about her battles with drugs and depression. Maia says she did it all from ecstasy to weed to cocaine. She has been drug free since 2002, and she is the mother of two girls.


Is American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino in danger of losing her title? According to published reports Fantasia signed a deal with a professional management company before she signed up for Idol. That may disqualify her from winning the show’s one million dollar recording deal. Did Fantasia Lie? According to Idol rules you are not permitted to have a current recording talent management contract. Tracy Smith of Atlanta claims Fantasia signed a deal with her when she was 15 with her parents. Fantasia is now 19. If Fantasia has to give up her title it would go to runner up Diana Degarmo.


The Isley Brothers will be performing in a free concert on the 4th of July. The Isley Brothers featuring Ron Isley will be performing as part of the Sunoco Welcome America Festivities on the steps of the Art Museum.


What’s going on with P. Diddy? He missed his weekend performances on Broadway in “A Raisin in the Sun” due to illness? What made him sick? Was it the public news that he’s been cheating on his baby’s mother, Kim Porter. Diddy has been spotted with a pretty Asian woman. He’s been seeing her on the sly because he didn’t want to hurt his youngest son’s mother, model Kim Porter. Now Kim knows and I’m sure she let P. Diddy have it.


Lionel Richie opens up about his life in the new issue of Jet Magazine. Lionel talks for the first time about the 1988, fighting incident with his ex-wife Brenda Richie. Brenda rendered the punch that was heard around the world when she beat up Lionel and his then girlfriend and soon to be wife Diane Martin. Lionel says he is not a wuss. He was raised not to hit on women and that’s why he didn’t strike back at Brenda. He says the two have made peace with each other since the incident. Lionel talks about his second troubled marriage and how he is working out an amicable divorce settlement. Lionel and his daughter Nicole are on the cover of the Jet and they discuss their relationship. Nicole is the adopted daughter of Lionel and Brenda Richie. Her biological father is Pete Escovedo, Sheila E’s brother, but she considers Lionel to be her dad because he raised her since she was three. Nicole is the star of The Fox show The Simple Life with best pal Paris Hilton. Nicole has had quite a past she has been drug free for two years. Nicole started abusing drugs when she was 13 years old. Lionel blames himself for her descent into drugs. He says he was too busy being Lionel Richie, an absentee dad. He says he will not make the same mistake with his youngest children and he now plays a major part in Nicole’s life. Lionel also talked about reuniting with his former band mates, The Commodores, and he would like to write a Broadway musical. In the same issue of Jet there’s an update on the Four Tops. They recently celebrated their 50th Anniversary and they were honored in Detroit. Levi Stubbs the lead singer of the group suffered a stroke a couple of years ago and he has not been able to tour with the fellas. He is pictured in a wheelchair.

I read the book and somehow, I wasn't convinced. It all seemed fake. Even though he may be gay, formally DL, or whatever, the book was a crock! This dude seems to have "created" these stories to make cash. It worked, but damn!

I watched an episode last weekend of Ray Charles' biography on A&E. The show mentioned that he had fathered children out of wed-lock, but he paid child support. I know in one case, he went to court and it was so ordered. :confused: Supposedly, he has left a million dollars to each child. If this is the case, what is the big deal? :confused: Are the grandchildren entitled? They should be when/if their parent has passed on...

Yolanda also suffered a miscarriage in Feb/Mar (early 2004). :(

I LOVE EN VOGUE I don't care how they got rid of the new member...Good Bye!!!! She can be pissed day and night, but that trio "en vogue" was not En Vogue. My FUNKY DIVA's are back. I was so happy to see them together again. Cindy should have a tribe by now. It seems like everytime I hear about En Vogue she has a baby on the way, had a baby, thinking about a baby..... I forgot who she married (I thank a football player). I cannot wait for the CD.
