Even though this thread has taken some twists and turns I think it actually shows us exactly why MCGLO's exist.

And speaking of standards for membership, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but for HBGLO's don't you have to know a member or be a legacy? I have known several ladies that joined NPHC groups and it seemed to me they have a very selective process. Is this also the case for MCGLO's?

I can only speak for Theta Nu Xi, but if an aspirant doesn't have a member to give us her background, her credentials have to be especially stellar. We have the luxury of having a very selective process as we have time to really get into contacting references, confirming activities, etc. The thing is, we can't afford to take individuals who are not committed to our tenets and who will not uphold our standards. Such people can't just fade into the crowd because we don't really have a crowd. I will be VERY surprised if ever I see a line of more than fifteen aspirants at once. And, that's really pushing it as we discourage chapters having more than thirty members at a time.

Now, there are certain fraternities that might not. For example, some top tier schools at Ole Miss won't bid you unless you're from a private school in Mississippi. I personally think that is stupid, especially since I went to public school. Our fraternity is about half and half as far as school, but it probably evens out, given that Atlanta and Birmingham metro area public schools are often as good if not better than Alabama or Mississippi private schools. Also, we don't limit ourselves to just Alabama (I went to Auburn) in taking pledges. Of course there are places we somewhat avoid in the south (some Atlanta, Florida), but we also get a lot of our guys from the Carolinas (Charlotte, Greenville, Charleston). I mean, I love the South, but I'd probably vote to bid a kid from Vermont if he was cool enough. Granted, I'd make fun of him for being a yankee, but so long as he didn't partake in yankee practices like voting democratic, I wouldnt foresee a problem.

See? That's what I thought. It's not that you don't feel comfortable with minority members, but members who don't "mesh" with your chapter's culture. I bet you probably won't give a bid to a guy from an old New England family because he doesn't "mesh" with southern culture.

Thank you! When I was in undergrad I don't think there were any MCGLO's on my campus at that time so I was curious as to how they operated.

shinerbock 07-30-2006 03:02 PM

Yeah, of course we don't bid people who don't "mesh" with us. I mean, its not like we'll blanketly refuse anyone from outside the region, but why would we want people who are completely different from us?

Why would you want to extend a bid to someone who doesn't fit in or "mesh" with the members of your chapter.

It's very selective ;)

Ill be honest, most girls in MCGLOs at my school are far FAR from attractive, most are overweight and seem to lack hygiene as well as the ability to speak proper English and behave like a lady in public. The ones I've seen on other campuses are mostly consistent with that description. Certainly does not give off the impression of being selective in my view. Take that for what it's worth, not trying to be an asshole just being honest.

I know! Isn't it a shame that we can't all be white and wealthy?

...

I SERIOUSLY doubt that college-educated women have these hygiene and linguistic issues as you say. Anyway, being overweight does not inherently affect beauty. In YOUR eyes, fat might be unattractive. That's not how I see things though.

Then you probably go to the wrong school, buddy.

shinerbock 07-30-2006 10:17 PM

Well, don't take this the wrong way, but it could be true. I mean, at my school, the MC groups are pretty much considered lower tier sororities and fraternities, and are often filled with people who couldnt get in to the other groups. Now I'm sure some come in with the purpose of joining one of those groups, but I just don't think they're popular, or viewed the same way here as they might be in other areas.

That's not necessarily true. Most of the girls that come out during "rush weeks" would have never joined a sorority if they didn't go MCGLO from my experiences in recruitment. But then again, my alma mater was a commuter school so Greek Life is generally different here.

shinerbock 07-30-2006 10:39 PM

I'm sure its not necc true, it just tends to be at my school, at least from my vantage point. I mean, there is an obvious heirarchy there. I could probably poll all greeks on what the worst sorority is on campus, and I'd probably get 95% giving the same answer. I know its not the same everywhere else, but a lot of the people who go MC or to service groups didn't have much luck at the IFC and NPC groups.
