This didn't annoy me but made me laugh and go "Duh!"!!;)

After dating/being married to her son for years, my mom in law and I were in a bookstore so I could pick up some Alpha Gam stuff. She sees all the squirrels and knows that I've been collecting them for years (she's even given me some).

"So, are squirrels your mascot"?

No, but they're easier to find than chipmunks.;)

Just kidding!!

Mom: Thats a screwed up looking E.
Me: Mom, its a Sigma
Mom: Huh?
Me: Mom its a Greek Letter
Mom: Why do yall use Greek Letters
Me: Cause they look cool.

People walk up to me while I have a shirt on or something.
So youre a frat boy?
No.
Oh cause I mean your wearing a fraternity shirt.
Oh yeah thats right, I am in a fraternity.
Which one?
Um lets see my shirt says Kappa Simga, maybe thats it? nah im just playing im a *insert whichever fraternity im feeling at the moment*
Oh ok

Then there is the interesting ones when i wear a sorority semi formal shirt or something.
I thought *such and such* was a sorority, like for girls?
It is.
I thought they didnt let guys in?
The dont.
Youre wearing their shirt.
Yes I am.
Why?

I could go on but Ill stop there.

A lot of people can't read Greek letters and I don't think I could before I started seeing fraternity and sorority stuff when I was in high school. I assume your shirt spelled out Kappa Sigma, so those people have no excuse.

As for the sorority formal shirts, it took me posting on GC to figure out why GLOs made event shirts for nonmembers to wear--regardless of whether there were Greek letters or the organization was spelled out. :) It was very rare for BGLOs to make event shirts for nonmembers to wear. I didn't even notice a lot of the nonBGLOs wearing event shirts when I was on college campuses. When I did, I probably assumed they were just borrowing their boyfriend/girlfriend's shirt--which I thought was a silly thing to do.

I agree with you on the formal shirts 100%. If you are not in that GLO, you should not wear their letters. Why would someone just give away their letters like that?

SWTXBelle 02-02-2008 03:22 PM

"Where" their letters?
To clarify, event shirts usually have (in addition to the name of the formal/event) either the sorority's letters -so any man wearing it would clearly not be a member, but a guest ( and ditto for a fraternity formal/event shirt - any woman wearing it would obviously be a guest)or in the case of a mixer, the fraternity and sorority letters - a woman wearing them would be a sorority member, a man wearing them would be in the fraternity. So there is no "giving" of letters, per se, when a guest WEARS the letters on an event shirt.

I guess not everyone is you are they?

As far as people not knowing Greek letters, why should they unless they are interested in Greeks?

Oh, I forgot, some of them are in college and do see them around and know who they are but not what they stand for.

For those that never went to college I can understand their ignorance.

I personally like it when girls wear our shirts around campus. It makes the the entire Greek system better when people know you are there, and it is a great rush tool when guys see a good looking girl wearing your letters. As far as guys wearing sorority letters, I mean it's pretty obvious that its a sorority shirt when the theme was "A PINK CHRISTMAS".

Kappa Sigma just recently established a chapter on my campus, and they're using girls as PR by giving them "I [heart] KS" shirts to wear.

I had to make a quick trip to this department store and was wearing an AKA t-shirt. An older woman who was in line purchasing some items spotted me and called out, 'Soror!' so I smiled and went over to say hello. A guy standing behind her said to me, 'Soror...now that is a unique name. Where did your parents come up with it?'
