Just to go on to what Leslie said earlier..yes, that's true!

From the beginning, until I knew where I was going to land, Leslie was a wonderful friend and when we knew I was going to be KD, she was such an inspiration and true sister! When I went to Los Angeles in 2005, we actually got to spend time together! It was wonderful to meet with her; and at that time, we knew I was going to be a member of Kappa Delta, but had yet to find out when initiation was. We kept in touch, and when I found out when my initiation was, I told her. Leslie surprised me by saying that she was flying to Alabama for my initiation, was present at my initiation in October 2005, and I had the honor of wearing her beautiful KD pin. Leslie "adopted" me as her "Lil Sis"--and I wore her pin until I finally got mine in the Spring of 2006. The entire time, she has always made certain that I knew what I needed to know about KD. Plus..she also gave me my first Vera Bradley!

She has been a wonderful "Big" and has been the best encouragement to me! I had the opportunity to return her hospitality when she came for initation: we were able to visit our longest running chapter, Zeta, at the University of Alabama, during their Homecoming Weekend, and she had the opportunity to see them at their best!

So..not only did she have a great twist, she also got to start another "KD Family" and I got a wonderful "Big".

Awwwweeeee, how sweet! I just don't know if I could put my badge in someone elses care and watch it fly to the other end of the country. :p Glad you found such a great Big!

Badge v. Pin

Back in the day....a really long time ago, we called our badges... pins.
My daughters call theirs badges, yes, I know a lot of things have changed!

I noticed this when I was remembering the lyrics of a song we sang in my chapter back when I was in school as compared to the official lyrics in the song on our international webpage today. I don't know if I misremembered it or if we really sang "pin set with pearl."

My Pledge Mother demanded that we would wear a pin, that the Adelpheans wore a badge. I understand that's not quite as strict anymore - or that it was a chapter thing.

I don't think I've ever referred to my pin as a badge. Badge sounds like something a Girl Scout earns, IMHO.

Of course, fraternity men "pin" their girlfriends; they don't "badge" them!

But you could make a case for "badgering"...

Now this was the best ever!

Gosh, gone a year and look at what happens! YAY, what a great story. I loved all of the pics. I love DG, preffed there along with Kappa, hard choice. Glad you got to experience two sororities, know thatthe DG thing had to really hurt and I hope you are still friends with lots of your good DG friends. I am so happy for you and I love it that you shared your badge, that is greeeaaat! I am tired and haven't adjust to being back, but I would be totally alright with doing that. I think that was really greeeaaat you did that. I got pinned with my Grandma"s Key and loved it. But I sent it home immediately because I would lose it and knew I was going to be gone. I think that is chill you did that, I wish more would do it. I hope gc'ers will take that and do it, it would make initiation even have more special memories. So happy you got KD and loved it, you deserved it! LOL Thanks!

Bumping because this is one of the best recruitment stories that I have ever read.

nittanyalum 10-21-2008 10:05 PM

Thanks for bumping this, Benz!

Wow, Leslie Anne, what a journey! NOW I understand why people were asking where you were in the DG pledge picture in that other thread. (I was all like, duh, don't they know she's a KD??!??! ;) ;))

Great, great story and I loved the pictures!

LucyKKG 10-21-2008 10:56 PM

Wow, what a great story! I hate you for making me procrastinate more (jk, that's my own fault). Best rush thread ever! I actually kept a lot of the chapters straight even though there were so many!

tangelo212 10-22-2008 03:49 AM

Umm, so I just read this in one sitting. At work. Comments and all! I think it just goes to show that some of the most stressful and rollercoaster times in our lives make for the craziest memories and stories in retrospect.

And a random tangent... My room mate this year is a Kappa Delta from my alma mater (we graduated in May), but we didn't know each other before. And I am an Alpha Phi (clearly.) Her little (biological) sister just went through informal at Maryland this semester! Her fave chapters were Alpha Phi and KD. Sadly, she didn't get a bid to either--but she didn't let it get to her (and I think she might go through again for formal). I just thought that was a cute coincidence :) I will pass this story onto my room mate's sister to encourage her to persevere!

CougarGrad 10-22-2008 05:58 PM

Wow, what a story. I just read it all in one sitting too! I'm so glad you found your home- third time's a charm, eh? :)
