One of the dead was from RI I just found out

I went to Brown, but I did my architecture studios at RISD. In fact, I took my classes at the RISD buildings right across from J&W's main gate. I used to take breaks and get food there. :)

Brown has always been really good about condolences and that sort of thing. We had so many "community vigils" right after 9/11. My best friend from college passed away a year and a half after graduation, and I believe the president still keeps in contact with her parents.

I watched Dateline tonight which was the first time I'd heard anything about who the victims were. They all seemed like they were well-liked by other students and faculty. They had alot of diverse interests.

There was a marching band member, dancer, sorority member, Peruvian national swimteam member, ROTC cadet, accomplished scholars and professors, and so many others. So many promising lives.

One that stands out to me is the 78 year old engineering professor and Holocaust survivor who lost his life trying to hold the door shut so his students could try to escape through the window.

For those of you that don't know, yesterday was Holocaust memorial day...on all days for a Holocaust survivor to be killed, and in such a way.

You mean you voluntarily ate JWU food??? You are the first person I've ever heard say that!

It's nice to know that Brown is good at that kind of stuff, I'm very disappointed by the way JWU is handling this. Last year when an international student passed away they handled it a lot better then this. I don't think just because it was one of our students vs. non students it should make any difference at all.

Ok, I thought nothing else from this situation could make me cry anymore until this. :(

*hugs* I didn't mean to make anyone cry more...but it had the same affect on me this morning when I logged onto LJ and one of my sisters posted it.

Actually he died in a very heroric way, saving his students, making sure that they survive. I cried so hard when I watched it on TV. I guess when you live through the Holocaust, you see life more precious, and you would rather sacrifice yourself to save more people...I salute to the professor...

This is the first I heard of this very heroic act and I am in tears.

There is no greater act of love, duty or honor than to give up ones life so others may live.

I watched the program and also starting crying when I heard about the Holocaust survivor. I cried again when President Bush was talking about the man who passed out - he had lost his only child. :(

Anyone watch Olbermann tonight? My roommate said he compared this situation to Iraq, which obviously didn't take long. What an asshole.

macallan25 04-17-2007 11:32 PM

I watched it and I was rather shocked. What a completely classless individual.

......of course, Barack Obama also turned the massacre into a theme and compared it to Don Imus.

PM_Mama00 04-17-2007 11:33 PM

The professor that died did not only survive the Holocaust, he also survived cancer. They had mentioned how scared and grey faced he was. Just picturing him makes my heart break.

Have Cho's parents spoken up? I can't imagine what they are going through right now and I hope they have police protection.

Otterbein held a moment of silence today at 2 pm, and the bells of Towers Hall were rung 32 times.

That surprises me. I don't like Obama, but he doesn't seem like someone who would lack tact in a time like this. About Olbermann, can't say I'm surprised, but still, what a jerk.
