I found the list of names my parents had picked out for me if I was a boy or girl:
I liked most of the girl names: Siobhan, Vanessa and Samantha (which I'm a big fan of), but they also had Caroline on that list and I am not a fan of that name. If I was a boy my parents were going to call me Simon (after a family friend), but they had Duncan on that list. A good scottish name, unless your last name is Poole. WTF? Duncan Poole? Don't know what my parents were smoking when they came up with that one. My brother was supposed to be called Fraser (after a family friend). I had the irish name, so my brother needed to have a scottish name. My parents decided not to go with Fraser though, and it makes sense if you live in Vancouver. The largest river (and most important river) that runs through BC is the Fraser River, and parents didn't think being called Fraser Poole and living on the Fraser River was a good idea - but they thought Duncan Poole was a good idea! So my brother ended up with the name Andrew, which became extremely popular in the early 80's when he was born. I still think they should have gone with Fraser... |

But on the topic--I definitely went to school with a Precious, and Unique. The weirdest though was Fuschia. Yes, as in the color. And amazingly--no one ever pronounced it right first....maybe they just couldn't believe someone would name their kid after an obscure shade of red and pink. Oh, and I went to school with a Mahogany too. I also taught a kid named Miashia (pronounced MY-ee-SHA). Where you get MY-ee-SHA out of that I don't know. Side note: Her mom was Hishia (HI-ee-SHA). Weird. |

I was the first girl born in my father since my mother, so there was a LOT of input on what should be my name: Valerie Louise, Melanie Marie, Sandra Sue, Scarlette (note the "e"), etc, etc. My parents liked Valerie Louise the most, but in my family, that would have become Vally-Lou much too fast, so it was scrapped. They had decided on Melanie until they read in some book that it meant "dark and sorrowful". So, out of the blue, they went eight generations back to find my name in our family tree! Thank heavens they didn't go with the other side, or I'd be Gennett! Which is a long way of saying that, as much as I'm into genealogy & family names, I would NEVER name a child "Gennett"!!! |
Jinger!

Wish I had His Money and No damn Kids!:D Oh, Name That Boxer!:) |
I know this is a sacrilege to say (because of my affiliation with DG) but I am not crazy about the name "Hannah".

the best name I have ever come across was in middle school. Some half asian half white kid was name Waut Jenkins. Pronounced "What" Jenkinds... so if anyone ever says 'you know what?' I always giggle on the inside.

I have a friend who's mom is a teacher and had two brothers (I think) in her class who's names were Lemonjello (accent on the "o") and Oranjello (accent on the "a"). Freakin weirdos. Who the hell names their kids lemon jello and orange jello? I don't care if it's not pronounced that way, it is very obvious. If I had been a boy I would have been Joshua Abraham. Apparently my dad was going through what my mom calls a "biblical phase" at the time. All I have to say is thank goodness I was a girl. I like my first name, and my middle name (Rae) is after my great grandfather and is somewhat original so I like that too. Most things are better than what my grandmother wanted them to name me..... Dixie Lee. Yikes. |
I wouldn't name my kid "Jeeves".
Speaking of names, I just thought this was kinda cute (but maybe I'm partial to him) - The other day, my boyfriend's friend asked him, "Guess who I saw at Mass today!" He said, "Juan!" The other guy responded, "Yea! How did you know?" Jonathon said ....brace yourself for this one... "There was bound to be some-Juan there!" a ha.. ha.. ha yeah. :D (This is why we get along... we both have stellar senses of humor. ;) ) |

I have a friend who wants to name her child----and i'm not lieing---- Prism 1000. At first I thought she was joking, but I found out that her mother was going to name my friend that, but the girl's dad talked her out of it and my friend liked that it was soo "unique." So she's gonna name her first daughter Prism 1000. My friend ended up being named Cierra Marie Chanel Antonia L*****.
If I had been a boy, my name was going to be Samuel Anthony---yuck! Lol. My mom had also told me that my name was originally going to be Naomi, but she thought that my name had too many biblical references (b/c my middle name is Ruth and my last name is also a person in the bible), so she changed my name to Vanessa. I kinda wished she had kept Naomi, I like that name a lot more than Vanessa.....especially since I constantly have to spell it...seriously, how hard is it to spell Vanessa? I understand some people spell it differently, but dang. I will not name my child: --Amanda --Lindsey --Ashley --Mary (although I do have the name Maria as a possible name for my future children..lol) --Martha --Laura --Julie and a few others only because they are very common. I do like the more traditionally "Hispanic" names, even if many of them are common, but I just can't imagine naming my child one of the above names----don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with them, it just isn't to my choosing! I also get soured on potential names when i meet people with the same name. For example: At one point I ADORED the name Nayeli, but when i was on a young life trip, I met a girl named Nayeli and she was not a nice person, and that soured the name for me!! lol. |

I will definitely avoid some names that are perfectly acceptable simply because someone with that name has left bad feelings with me. Some of those being Crystal, Jill, Heather and Cynthia. And for guys.... Luke and Kyle (among QUITE a few others). I used to love the names, but now not so much. ;) |
