Essentially, yes. GC is not a democracy, and I don't understand what led you to believe it was. The board is run the way John and the mods think it should be run. If you don't agree with that, that's fine -- but that's the way things are here, and things are unlikely to change unless the mods and John decide they agree with you.

The terms of service do not run this site. John and the mods run this site. If they do not find something offensive, even if it breaks the terms of service, it's unlikely to get deleted. And of course I've gotten away with things that break the terms of service. For example, if Kath and I were new members of GC who stopped by the board and posted some of the things that we've posted in the "Southern" threads, for example, we probably would have gotten flamed and the threads would have been locked. But since we've been around a while and most of the GC-ers know that we're either exaggerating, kidding or just poking fun at them, very few people got offended. Should we be treated the same way that a new member would be treated for the same thing? I don't think so. Like I said before, context is everything.

I don't think there's a person on this site with at least a hundred posts who hasn't gotten away with some violation of the terms of service.

cashmoney, I guess I need everything to be clearly spelled out for me understand what exactly you mean. I think that if you have a problem with a post, report it to a moderator. If the moderator doesn't respond, PM John. You should also consider that what is offensive to you, might not be offensive to someone else. The post might not be deleted. I don't think that it has anything to do with a hierarchy as much as it has to do with individual tastes and sensitivities.

A lot of you say you admire the way the NPHC forums run, how the moderators keep things in check.

However, if chit-chat, GL, and others were run like that you'd all have a fit and say that GC's no fun anymore.

So essentially many people are talking out of both sides of their mouth...

Additionally: being a mod is a volunteer thing. There are NO perks (no free food or concert tickets, heck, can't even put it on a resume) and if anything it's just more headaches.

I think people were saying it's question of balance. Exactly the same theme applies to the comment in a post prior to yours suggesting all members with >100 post counts have probably posted an item along the way which didn't fit in with the rules. Probably true. I suppose moderation is important to ensure we can all chat happily. If draconian moderation was present to such a degree people could not talk at all and discussion was hampered that'd be different. But I don't think that's what anyone wants/asks.

Hmm. In fairness many of those forums do have several moderators with settings for that forum, which splits the workload for them.

As far as any 'rules don't run the site' comments elsewhere, of COURSE there is discretion and personal insight/experience used in moderating; that's how non-automated moderation is an effective tool. But the discussion is [partly] about moderators enforcing/applying the rules enough to encourage and promote discussion and keep things from getting horrible. Suggesting the Rules are enforced to the nth degree on every post all the time 24/7 could be seen as ... silly.
The thread was more about not so much the moderators not seeing a post as a problem when another has... but more about them not seeing it as a problem due to its origin not its content.
