Ok so what have we all learned today?
1. This show has and will present a bad view of sorority life. 2. This was perhaps not the wisest decision that this sorority made. 3. People are pissed off. So here's what I think. As a founder of a local sorority, I can empathize with the Sigmas. It's hard to be a new group, and I'm sure being Jewish women on a campus with a low Jewish population is even harder. And, let's all face it, inter-greek relations are not always as peachy keen as we would hope for. From what could I see on their website, it didn't seem as though the Sigma's felt very welcomed by the other orgs on their campus. So if the greek community at their school didn't help to make them feel like they were a part of it, then why should they be concerned with the overall reputation that they could be affecting? Now I'm definitely not saying that I think it was a wise decision, or that I think the publicity that these girls get will be all that good. But my point is, when you're struggling to keep an organization going (which is indeed more difficult when you don't have a national org to help you out, or years of tradition backing you up) then sometimes your main concern is going to be staying alive, and not how our efforts were going to reflect on a community which you aren't necessarily considered a part of. I know this may sound extreme, and maybe I'm totally off track here, but it is SO HARD to run a new local org, and I can see where the Sigmas may be coming from. Beyond all this, I think that anyone who is actively concerned about their reputation and has half a brain would realize (if they thought about it) that this was not really a good idea. However, can't you all see how your judgement could be affected by the promises and potential that MTV presumably offered them? Hope this didn't come off too bitchy, I just hate seeing everyone on this website throwing accusations at eachother left and right and inaverdently offending eachother. Hope this was at least interesting, if not informative! Corina |

Does this author actually believe that we are jealous? That we had our metaphorical MTV lottery tickets in hand and are all pissy because we didnt get picked? IS HE FREAKING SERIOUS???? Sorry, I think hes forgetting something. THAT NO NATIONAL GLO WOULD TOUCH THIS WITH A 10 FOOT POLE. Thats why they had to pick a group thats been around for about 6 minutes whos only authority is the school...no alums, no national group, nothing. I cant believe this guy, talk about being full of yourself... |
I have a question...Was any type of hazing, underage drinking, etc, taped for the show? These activities are illegal in addition to just making greeks look bad, and could carry some serious consequences for Sigma.

Thanks againg to one of our GCers, I checked the Site for the MTV THING!
To me it is a slap in the face the The Brothers from SAE! I think we all know what the Pi stands for! Wow I am underwhelmed with this kind of Crap! You all know the word I wanted to use! If I ever have a chance to see it and do, I will of course try to judge it on its own merrits! Will wait to see! |
re: lifesaver
Lifesaver, do you really want to bring up that whole weak argument that no national org. would have wanted to do the show??? If you're not going to listen to what I've been saying, at least listen to DeltAlum:

Please don't try to turn this into a national vs. local issue. |

Tom, Sigma was helped in its founding by AEPi, so I think you're mistaken about where their name came from.
From their site: Alycia looked for a name that would have some significance in Judaism, something that might spell a word in Hebrew, or that might be a significant number. However, as so many Greek names were already taken, Alycia and Erin decided to pay homage to the organization that helped Sigma get its start, AEP. The "Sigma" in our name is meant to represent "sisters of," making us the sisters of AEP. |
Why is it that some folks can't wait until the dag-blasted show premiers on Monday before making judgements?
Why is it that some folks have forgotten that " people who live in glass houses should not throw stones"? Why is it that some folks don't care that THEIR house is dirty, as long as its not on TV? Why is it that in this case that one GLO represents ALL GLO's, but not in others? So does that mean that the next time someone say "on my campus the XYZ sorority are full of ugly girls, members of XYZ are not allowed to say those famous words of "every chapter is different "? Why is it??????? AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! I think some of you guys are giving this show TOO MUCH CREDIT and MORE POWER than it deserves! Seriously............... Gosh, this show is getting more attention than the Tyson?Lewis fight, the superbowl, and the world series put together! |
right on!
Sing it sister! You are so right!

I almost want to feel bad for these girls! Yes, they should be held responsible for what this show will do, and equally so should MTV. No SIGMA, this is not an issue of national v. local. I know of plenty local sororites that said no too. But maybe by being national/international, we just had better advisement. That is not a bad thing.
As Greeks, we are judged everyday by the letters we wear. It doesn't matter if people have no idea who we are or what we stand for. They see us as a bunch of college kids who only like to party, drink and cause trouble. Even though we have not seen this show yet, most of us are smart enough to know that no matter how it goes its only going to make us stand out even more as that "type" of group. This show will not only have an effect on your house...it will touch every single house internationaly. I truely hope that this show does go well...for your sake and for the sake of all of us. However, I hope you guys know what it is you have put on the line. |
I have a question:
Is anyone going to watch this? |
Official MTV website
Official MTV site for Sorority Life
Interviews with them all.... those intersted might want to read. -Danielle |
I've been pretty careful about not trying to get bogged down in the bickering back and forth, so I went to the MTV site and checked things out for myself. What made my heart sink were the captions next to the photos of the new members and actives. They were just stereotypical and tacky! It was upsetting to me. If that's what the captions are like, I dread what the rest of the show will consist of.
I will reserve my judgement until I see the first show, but in the meantime I will be praying for the best...and-- unfortunately--expecting the worst. :( |
