While she grew up in the South, times have changed. How long ago did she actually mention the no no word?

From what I understand it was only a couple of years ago.

The bank robbery was in 1987.

I found a really interesting article on the subject. If you still feel after reading this that her off-handed use of an off-color (excusing the pun) word 20 years ago is the issue and are supporting her anyway, then you need to out yourself for what you really are.

That is an interested article. Thank you for sharing that! Some of that I did not even know.

Good article and interesting comments section. There are other news sources (and posts in this thread) that outlined the allegations beyond a racial slur. But, people wanted this to be about a racial slur said 30 years ago. Deen's supporters will be her supporters and they have every right. I do not believe in shaming people based of their support for certain things. To do so would encourage inauthenticity and acting. There is enough inauthenticity and acting in the world.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the lawsuit. If the allegations are true, THAT should be what to focus your support/non-support of Deen. I hope they are not, not because I care about Deen (I prefer the Lee Brothers and Southern Living for my southern cookbooks) , but because being treated like that would be HORRIBLE. Hope the truth becomes known and punishment falls where it should.

Tom replaced UVA17? You all shouldn't have kicked UVA17 out. :(

I really doubt UVA17 is Tom, and last I checked, UVA wasn't banned.

He/she may have decided against posting considering the thinly veiled threats to out him/her and ruin his/her rush prospects. I really gotta hand it to some here, threatening young people like that because you disagree with them on the internet. Classy.

No, but ibis is Tom.

FWIW, I didn't read any posts as threatening to ruin her rush prospects (which I agree has happened here in the past). I read the posts as warning her that she wasn't as anonymous as she might think and that she might be hurting her chances herself. That was certainly the motivation behind my post.

I didn't even see ibis... I guess they were deleted? I understand why Tom was banned in the first place, but considering what happened occurred a number of years ago and the guy is still a pretty influential and well known member of a major national fraternity, I wouldn't mind seeing him back. I doubt we'd see a repeat of the OTW or HPRL incidents.

As far as what you said, I don't think you were making any sort of veiled threat, but this:

I am going to give you a very good piece of advice. I would strongly suggest you dial back the insults - as a pnm who has already posted identifying information on this site you really don't want to run the risk of insulting long-time GreekChatters who 1.) have mad detective skills and 2.) have contacts like you wouldn't believe. You would not be the first pnm to think she was unidentifiable and "bulletproof" to be left wondering why her recruitment came to a crashing halt on the day she was dropped by all the chapters.
That looked to me like a threat. For PNMs or others who come here to discuss things, we ought to not be so quick to threaten or even allow these sorts of threats. Although, I'd be interested to know the process one would undertake to figure out what sort of real name belongs to a rando on the internet named UVA17.

The ibis post is still there. He's been around under that name for a while, but he doesn't post often.

Fair enough, though I didn't read it that way. As far as figuring out who she might be, though, she gave her name (not a common one) in her intro post, and she had the town she's from as her location. Assuming both were accurate, and assuming her username indicates UVa Class of '17, it wouldn't be that hard to ID her at ZUVa, I don't think.

SWTXBelle 07-03-2013 09:59 AM

I wrote it - not a threat but as I clearly said, advice. Calling sorority alumnae "menopausal shrews", amongst other things, is just not a good idea. It's hardly, what's the word, Kevin, "classy". I am not a GC detective, but I know plenty on this site who are, and I know of at least 3 cases where recruitments were negatively impacted. A threat would have been "I AM GOING TO RUIN YOUR RECRUITMENT". I made her aware of possible consequences of her very negative postings. I may well have saved her disrespectful derriere. She had posted enough information (perhaps she's deleted it now) that even incompetent GC detective that I am I could have figured out how many pnms from her hometown with her name were going through recruitment at UVA - I wouldn't be surprised if she was the only one. I'd hope my GC on-line presence is such that you would realize I am all about pnms having successful recruitments.

Kevin 07-03-2013 10:03 AM

I'm sure that's what you intended and I know what you're about, but surely you can see where your ordinary PNM might perceive it as a threat.
