Wearing the Irish Guard uniform? I thought it was very interesting - I'm sure it has significane, but I also think it might have been partially aesthetic

Will wore dashing red of his highest honourary military postion, rather than the more subdued dress blues of his current role in the RAF

Well yes. If he chose to go in uniform he had four choices. He could have gone in the uniform of a Captain in the British Army, a Lieutenant in the RN, a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF or as a Colonel in the Irish Guards. The first 3 are legitimate military ranks he holds. He is entitled to wear the last because he is the Irish Guards' Colonel, which is an honorary position he was appointed to. Kind of curious why he chose that route, though aesthetics can't be ruled out because of how distinctive the Guards' uniform is.

The Princess Royal's husband (name is just evading me right now) wore his red uniform for their wedding. While I doubt he was paying homage to his great-uncle, I don't find it peculiar. Even if not for aesthetic, I don't see any reason why it would be political.

ETA: I see how it could be political, but not why he would have worn it for political reasons.

The only political reason I could find involved making nice with Ireland prior to a visit, which doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, but eh...

I believe that since the Irish Guards are currently stationed in Afganistan, he chose to wear that uniform as a sign of solidarity. (at least that's what Diane Sawyer said)

So, I'm at The Talker's house last night and he gets started on the Royal Family and Britain and pulls out a book of the whole lineage from William the Conqueror and up which ends with Princess Di's death. And he's showing me the different names (House of Tudor, House of Windsor, etc.) and going over the family trees and I'm thinking to myself "There are some people on GC who would be digging on this". LOL *sign that you are on GC too much when...*
