I like this idea. Ban the spammers and keep new ones from joining. I'm sorry for legitimate joiners, but if it can fix the bigger problem, then it might be worth it for now,

John has been MIA for several months already. Doesn't it defeat a lot of the value of GC if new PNMs cannot ask questions prior to rush? We still have some very big campus recruitments to come...

As John appeared to be MIA, I had considered the possibility of something like this, too, and I was hoping it wouldn't be the case. No matter how annoying the spam is, I would never wish ill on someone or his family. :(

I am happy to volunteer as an additional person to delete the spam posts! I typically log onto GreekChat at the very end of my day and lately the whole first page is full of spam. Please let me know how I can help!

Wow, there's a giant new batch of spam tonight. Although if one of the phone number spam messages was for a spell to nuke spammers forever, I'd be OK with that. :D

I wish I could help clean up the spam posts. Being in the timezone I'm in, it would be easy for me to keep everything looking nice for when everyone wakes up in the morning!

Many, many, many of us have offered to help. It looks like John, who is MIA, is the only one that can grant that authority. Without privileges to deal with spam, no one else can help.

I think the answer is right here in front of us…GC needs to hire a “black magic specialist” to get rid of all the spam on the forums!

Indeed. The spam is out of control. I'd be more than willing to grab my pulse pistol and get rid of some of the spam posts ... except I'm about one pulse pistol short of having a pulse pistol. All I can do is keep the AEPhi forum clear.

Ditto here on all of the above, but I can keep the AOII forum clear. The mods are doing what we can, but many of us only have permissions in our individual GLO subforums. I'm sure most everyone knows this, but just in case thought I'd mention again.

14 pages of "new threads" and the majority (>95%) are spam posts.

This is beyond absurd.

And I still don't understand why there is not a method for preventing the spam threads from being posted in the first place.

Is there no one here who has direct contact information for John so that someone else can take over or get more people who have offered to help repeatedly access to be able k clear spam?

People have tried contacting John at his work email, and it bounced back.

What if we just abandoned this site? Start a new site, close the active boards here, and just start over again? John isn't doing what he should, and even the active mods are limited in what they can do.

That's a thought. That is sort of what happened on another site I frequent, when the original owners decided to quit.

I'm starting to think this is the only solution.

This is what I was thinking, but I thought it might be too terrible to suggest. However, as the days go on and the spam keeps piling up at an unstoppable rate, it's looking more and more like this may be our only option.

I agree... I don't post much either, but visit regularly to read updates. It should be fairly easy to create one on something like proboards, maybe? It's a slightly different setup than this one, but should still work.

I'm amazed at how spambots flock here. Maybe a new board could be called Greektalk.com or something like that?

After paying to support this site for the next 5 years, it pisses me off, but I reluctantly agree that moving might be best.

For those who are clamoring for a new board, I think it would be prudent to do research on how to set up and run a board. It's not a walk in the park, folks. I'm not volunteering. NO WAY.

I was thinking that perhaps someone already in our group might have some knowledge of how to do that. I certainly don't, unfortunately.

I've run a few small Vbulletin and bbpress based boards and modded on a few others. I'm willing to help in whatever way I can.

The feeling I got from John a while back was that the day-to-day operations of managing GC was getting to be a lot for him to handle. I think he said something to the effect that managing GC turned into a full-time job.

If I recall correctly, part of the reason you have to post in the Intro thread first was to prevent spammers. But now they have gotten past that.

I don't know anything thing about creating or managing a message board, but maybe if John could make it harder to initially log in to GC, then maybe that will cut down the spam. It seems like there needs to be more stringent filters in place.
