No, idkk was saying that the gang member from Pomona was Castaneda, not Ciaccio. idkk did NOT say that Ciaccio was not the main drug dealer....simply that he was not a gang member.

Which I'm inclined to agree. I don't think a 36 year old gang member would be a very effective main dealer at a college...everyone would think he was a narc.

Gamma Nu Chapter Temporarily Suspended Operations Pending an Investigation


INDIANAPOLIS (Wednesday, May 7, 2008). As the result of San Diego State University's interim suspension of the Gamma Nu chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu, the Fraternity has temporarily suspended operations of the chapter pending an investigation.

Gamma Nu was one of six fraternity chapters suspended by the University as the result of an investigation into drug trafficking/sales. One individual affiliated with the Gamma Nu chapter has reportedly been arrested. The chapter has suspended this member and is reviewing his status.

Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity is committed to developing leaders, fostering scholastic excellence and preparing members to be good citizens. The use and/or trafficking of illegal substances is contrary to the values and traditions of the Fraternity. The Fraternity supports the University's and law enforcement's efforts to fight this major social problem.

Sigma Alpha Mu was founded in 1909 at the College of the City of New York as a Fraternity of Jewish men. Today the fraternity has active chapters on 62 North-American campuses.

On my way home from work this evening, not more than 30 minutes ago, I heard a news report on NPR about the events at SDSU and about drug use at other colleges; I have to praise their reporting as they did not mention AT ALL any GLOs....it was refreshing to hear a report that DID NOT say "fraternity this, fraternity that".....

I need to disagree with this statement. In the news coverage you heard, they may not have been too obvious about it, but the stories I've been following have been quite quick to name fraternities, focus on the Greeks at SDSU as a cause of the problem, and portray us in that classic "animal house" image once again.


I'm doing my best to spread the word that Greeks a positive influence on the campus of US colleges. Please see my video posting on youtube by clicking here. The media never shows the great things Greeks do, at least not in any big media way (which is simply the way the media works...i'm not complaining).

Instead of complaining and being negative about how we've been treated by the media in the past, I've taken initiative and started the Greeks Do Great Things Website (click here) so that Greeks from around the country can show the world the great things that they've done on their specific college campus.

Go to the site, leave a quick note about a positive thing that your chapter has done for your community or campus, and help me change the "animal house" sex drugs and rock and roll image that Greeks are portrayed with.

The world is looking at us all right now. I had nearly 10,000 people visit the blog article that I published on the topic in the first 48 hours that it was online. People came from all over the world, including Shanghai, London, South Africa, Australia, Sweden, and much more.

I apologize for making you think I'm just hear to advertise. That couldn't be further from the truth.

I'm here to get the Greeks of the country to come together and voice the positive things that they've done on their local college campus. Please take the time to understand that the world is watching Greeks and we can use this to abolish that negative image that non-Greeks have of fraternity or sorority life.

If we can work together we can do this!

Not really. But it's easy to get caught up in the story and sensationalize.

Drug use on college campuses has been a story in many settings for a long time. There have been undercover officers at city-based campuses for over decades, even if massive busts have not taken place. There have also been discussion by campus police departments and officials on trying to survey to student population or find other ways to gauge the drug use. It's just easier to target groups of college students (i.e. GLOs) because these are aggregates of students whose activities are more easily tracked. People who aren't dumb know that drug use among GLO members is only a sample of the larger college student population that is using and dealing drugs.

We have tons of threads on that already that concerned citizens can read at their leisure.

Please don't advertise your site on here anymore. ;)

Student from Hawaii caught up in drug bust
 

Most of the following story is based off of what must be the AP article that many papers used.
However it does have a few things I have not seen before:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - An honors student pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges that he sold cocaine in an undercover operation that culminated in massive drug busts at San Diego State University.

Kenneth Ciaccio, the suspected leader of a cocaine trafficking ring at the 34,000-student campus, is accused of selling cocaine twice to government agents. He faces up to six years and four months in prison if he is convicted.

His mother wept behind her hand as he was led out of the courtroom in shackles........
Federal officials said 128 people, including at least 75 SDSU students as well as a student from Hawaii who attends Grossmont College in nearby El Cajon, were arrested during the five-month investigation. Some students detained for minor drug offenses or other infractions turned informants for federal agents..........
Ciaccio's lawyer, Michael Messina, said he had not seen any evidence proving that his client was at the center of the ring purportedly operating out of the rundown fraternity house, a block off Fraternity Row.

"I do not believe he's the main guy," Messina said after the court hearing.

That's really a bummer that this idea is getting shot down on this board. I realize that 'concerned' citizens can wander through the threads of this forum and filter our the positive things that greeks have done. But that's not an efficient way to get the word out there...sure, it will work slowly, but I'm not satisfied with that.

I'm not trying to advertise...I'm trying to get people to take action. If you can't see that then I apologize. I've received support through other areas where I've been rounding up the troops and maybe I should just stick to positive arenas where Greeks care.

If I can gather enough positive stories about Greeks on my website, then I'm 100% confident I can get the media to stop ignoring the great things greeks do. I've never been prouder to be Greek then I have this week, interacting with so many people and explaining to each person exactly what it means to be greek.

People care, and I think it's important to spread the word.
