Thanks for the link OTW - I hadn't followed that thread (way too long) and had no idea about the background information. Hmmm...

Useless facts about Ireland

. . .the colour of the flag of Dublin is blue, not green, with the harp.

I didn't know Dublin had a flag (not a Dubliner). My people are from the south and west (Clare, Mayo, Tipperary mostly.)

And I can hijack my own thread if I want to.

SWTXBelle 09-11-2007 08:33 PM

Let's really hijack it

Don't most of the counties have their own "colours"??

irishpipes 09-11-2007 08:37 PM

First of all, are you British or Irish? (Wondering because of the spelling of "colours" )

I don't know if the counties do or not - they very well might. I've studied a lot about culture and music and also political and religious history, but I've never concentrated on the counties. I'll need to look up my counties and see. We just hang the old Irish flag at our house - the green with the gold harp and gold fringe.

ETA: Yes they do have flags! I didn't realize that the stickers on the cars there were the county flags.

SWTXBelle 09-11-2007 08:40 PM

Really, really southern - and taught with British spelling and numbers ( I cross my 7s, for example).
I was in Ireland about a month ago, and noticed that the different counties would have banners in what our guide told us were their colours. I just figured as our resident expert in all things Irish you might know.
And speaking of harps - of course Guiness uses the harp, and has one of Carolan's at the St. James Gate Storehouse.

Oh gosh - not the expert. A few GC posters have lived over there. I've only visted the old sod. My username just stems from the fact that I am a singer and used to sing Irish folk music. ("Pipes" being singer slang for lungs/vocal cords.) I do have great interest in many Irish things since my mom's family is from there, but I'm not an expert.

Irish music

My father was in a folk group in the 60s, I sang at Renfairs and various festivals, and my sister and brother were in Paisley Close. Sister was lead singer for Gordian Knot back in the day . .. small, small Celtic music world!

aopirose 09-11-2007 11:29 PM

My Irish hijack: A friend's sister competed in the local Rose of Tralee. She didn't win but it was a nice honor for the family.

bluefish81 09-11-2007 11:47 PM

Sorry to end your hijack.

Went to the Alumnae chapter meeting tonight. Kappa Alpha Theta at University of Nebraska - Lincoln has 33 new members from Formal Recruitment.

O.mi.gosh! I've heard of both Paisley Close AND Gordian Knot! I think they played either at a Renfair or on our annual Irish Weekend (which was last weekend here). If not there, one of the faires in DC. VERY small Celtic world!
