From the 'new colony' thread...

CONGRATS to LXA, we've chartered a BUNCH of chapters this semester.

I believe we only chartered ONE in Spring of 2004 (Pi Gamma Zeta) at Kent State.

We chartered NONE in Fall of 2004.

Including San Siego State this thursday, Springhill College last week, North Carolina A&T in April, Elmhurst in March, and Incarnate Word in February brings a total of FIVE this spring.

While we've only closed ONE chapter this academic year - Ball State.

Good job to HQ and to John Otten and the expansion staff.

The brotherhood needs you to keep up the good work. Hopefully this is the beginning of the turnaround!!

Fraternities, Sororities to Present at UT Tyler
May 23, 2005
Four fraternities and five sororities will make presentations on campus to potentially receive an invitation to colonize at UT Tyler in the near future, Mindy Sutton, director of student development, announced. The initial goal is to yield two North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) fraternities, two National Panhellenic Council (NPC) sororities and one fraternity and sorority from the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). The first fraternities and sororities could arrive on campus as early as fall 2005, said Sutton.
All presentations are open to the UT Tyler community, and will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 24 – Friday, June 14 in the University Center, rooms 221 and 227.
Each presentation will last approximately one hour with a 30-minute question-and-answer session and reception to follow.
The schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, May 24: Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority
Wednesday, May 25: Sigma Kappa Sorority
Thursday, May 26: Delta Gamma Sorority
Friday, May 27: Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity
Tuesday, May 31: Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity
Wednesday, June 1: Chi Phi Fraternity
Thursday, June 2: Alpha Chi Omega Sorority
Friday, June 3: Gamma Phi Beta Sorority
Friday, June 14: Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity
From these presentations, a committee, composed of UT Tyler faculty, staff and students, will recommend to the dean of student affairs and vice president of student affairs which fraternities and sororities should receive invitations to colonize at UT Tyler.
"We are very excited about the number and caliber of the fraternities and sororities interested in starting chapters at UT Tyler. We have a strong field of potential groups, which will make the decision even more difficult for our committee. Any of these groups would be a great addition to UT Tyler's campus life, and membership in them will only enhance a student's experience here," said Sutton.
The process is long and interesting. The first step of implementing Greek life was to inform the national governing bodies of UT Tyler’s interest in starting a Greek system. Interested fraternities and sororities provided information, and a committee composed of faculty, staff and students selected four fraternities and five sororities to present to the UT Tyler community.
After the fraternities and sororities present, the committee will invite two fraternities and two sororities to colonize in the ’05 -’06 academic year.
“The committee is looking for groups that contribute to the university’s mission in promoting academic excellence, adhering to their national organization’s risk management guidelines, providing community service and enhancing the college experience,” said Mindy Sutton, director of student development.
An overwhelming student interest in bringing Greek life to UT Tyler was identified through a survey. The decision to begin with two fraternities and sororities and one historically African-American fraternity and sorority was based on UT Tyler’s makeup. In the 2005 spring semester, UT Tyler’s ethnicity breakdown was 77.7% Caucasian, 10.2% African-American, 5.4% Hispanic and 6.7% classified as other.
“Every fraternity and sorority belongs to a national governing body. The groups we are looking to bring to UT Tyler belong to only three of these bodies, and each has a different colonization process,” said Sutton.
With the growth of the university and diversity in population, future fraternities and sororities will reflect the different nationalities represented.
Every Greek organization will be open to all UT Tyler students.
All Greek organizations are based on four common pillars: scholarship/academics, community service/philanthropy, brotherhood/sisterhood and leadership.

Read the paragraph below. Looks like colonization by quota!

The school already has choosen the NPHC groups, they are Alpha Phi Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta and they are colonizing. Lets hope we get one of the two fraternity spots, good competition with SAE and PiKapp.

lifesaver 06-09-2005 08:57 PM

Yeah. I'd love to have another chapter/colony in Texas.

Now, lets get to U of Houston, Texas Tech and Texas A&M Corpus Chrisiti.

Tom Earp 06-10-2005 03:23 PM

Quota or profiling in a perverse way?

If quota is being use, then it seems there should be more NIC and NPC Greek Organizations.

Hope some one is able to keep us updated.

Hope We are one.

Re: Texas Tech

I was the Pi at TTU in the early eighties. There seemed to be two very distinct Greek communities on the Tech campus: Those on Greek Circle and those that were not. The ones on the circle were very well financed and had beautiful lodges - nobody could live in a chapter house per city rules. Those not on the circle were scattered about town.

Rush was difficult because so many of the young guys were dazzled by the facilities on Greek circle vs. the shabby arrangements elsewhere. I don't know if a houseless / lodgeless colony would be successful there.

We clearly have something to offer but I don't know if we would be competitive on that campus today given the student body and what they are looking for. Better to expend our efforts where we can be successful than to burn up our time, money, and enthusiasm at a campus that is less hospitable to our cause.

John, that is very insightful.

I cannot remember what Zeta I saw during LXA Surfing that has a Lodge. About blew me away.

Cannot fathom just a building built for meetings and partys alone with no one living in it to:

1. Protect it.

2. Having to pay for the up keep.

As some know, the circle is small on GC, My Zeta is in Deep Trouble.

Now, A new House is bing built and am trying to get Help in many Avenues to build Membership through requitment.

While I have stated many times, "If LX Z" is not there, there is no reason for me to go back to My Alma Mater.

I too wonder where Money will be spent the best. Not that We do not have a lot of Money and Granted, it has to be spent wisely, I am sure (Hopefully) that IHQ will choose the sites wisely.

Its still that way. You are absolutely right that wed need a significant capital investment to be compedative there. I know its something that we (or LCAP) just cant afford right now, but hopefully eventuallty.

Its one of those systems thats real good to be in and we have to do a cost benefit analysis. Ideally, some group will fold and LCAP or local alums will go in to lease or purchase and get the chapter started after.

TTU

I was trying to find a polite way to say that the kids at Tech are looking for the sizzle and not the steak and I apparently was successful.

There had been a poorly handled membership review just before my arrival. Sometime, over a couple of fingers of bourbon and some ice, I'll share the story about how I became the Pi there. An interesting story to say the least!

John,

Isn't a couple of fingers of bourbon how most of us became High Pi's?

Eric

No truer words have even been said on GC.

All I know is that staff was in town and I woke up with a hangover and a colony to advise.

Expansion

I heard that a chapter of LCA is trying to get recolonized at Duke, but the deal was that Duke only has a certain number of fraternities that they allow on campus at one time. Last year I believe a slot opened, and Tau Kappa Epsilon got reinstated instead. But there is hope and maybe in the next year Duke will be a colony.......
