New & Improved Question:
How long has Chi O Creations (our boutique for buying all things Chi Omega) been around?
a.) It began in 1973, the year after Mary Love Collins died. b.) Kirk Cocke started it in 1985 during her term as S.H. c.) It began in 1989, when the Executive Office was still in Cincinnati. d.) Their first year of sales was 1995, during Chi Omega's Centennial Celebration. http://shop.chiomega.com/images/titl...erce-lobby.gif |
I'm going with D
And I'll tell ya why...:D I pledged in 95 and I feel like it was sort of a novelty at the time...But now I'm thinking c wouldn't be a bad answer....Oh I hate multiple choice! ;) |

Nooooo, it's not '95 (although Chi O Creations did a lot of business that year with the April weekend in Fayetteville, AR & the Centennial Celebration in June in Memphis). Your 2nd guess IS correct! It was 1989. Chi O Creations operated out of a warehouse in downtown Cincinnati & was strictly mail order. The "catalog" was one piece of paper, folded. A long stretch from the glossy 36-page catalog I received in the mail yesterday. Chi O Creations (or COC as is the lingo around the HQ) is now online and offers over 400 items. We HAVE come a long way in 15 years. Happy Anniversary, COC! |
Since it was 1928, and I'd imagine that National didn't have the kind of capital to pay for everyone out of pocket (I know we already had many many chapters, but I'd imagine HQ wasn't charging a whole lot for dues), I'll guess b) $9 a day, bath and meals included.
And I'd like to wish COC happy 15 years, too :) And I did start getting the Eleusis again! |
Oh my, that is a lovely place. Does Marriot own it? Perhaps we could have Convention there again:)
|
No, it's not part of a chain. Chi Omega had our Conventions there for many, many years. The last one held at the Greenbrier was 1978. It would be fun to go back, but the cost is almost prohibitive and White Sulphur Springs, WV is not the easiest place to access with 1300 delegates flying in from near & far. In the 1920s, most people took the train.

Already Dreaming of Convention '06
Which hotel property will host the next Chi Omega National Convention in 2006?
a.) Crystal City Marriott, Arlington, VA b.) The Jefferson, a Loews Hotel, Washington, D.C. c.) Crowne Plaza, Washington National Airport, Arlington, VA d.) The Peabody, Memphis, TN |

Re: Already Dreaming of Convention '06
You are correct, XOMichelle! I also think the Kappa Deltas are having their Convention there in '05. This will be the 3rd Convention in a row at a Marriott property.
2000 Marriott Desert Springs, Palm Desert, CA 2002 Marriott Riverwalk, San Antonio, TX 2004 Crystal City Marriott, Arlington, VA http://marriott.com/propertyimages/w..._leftimage.jpg Located less than 1 mile from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in the heart of Crystal City, this charming and delightful boutique-style hotel offers direct passage to Washington's world-renowned Metro rail system - allowing you to access the entire metropolitan area from within the hotel. Via an underground walkway, you can also access a vast and diverse network of over 125 shops and restaurants. |
Surprise!
In June 1995, at Chi Omega's Centennial Celebration, which of the following did not happen.
a.) an antique car carrying people dressed as our founders, drove inside the ballroom at the Memphis Convention center. b.) at the official dedication of the Headquarters building in Memphis, a man dressed in an owl suit parachuted out of a plane and landed in the parking lot. c.) A mysterious, anonymous group calling themselves The Five Society, donated a gift of 50 placesettings of fine china for the Headquarters d.) Mary Love Collins' grandaughter presented the Archives with MLC's Phi Beta Kappa key. |

NO WAY!!!!! That is hilarious! Please tell me you have a pic of that somewhere, Nut!!!
OK, then, I'm going to go with...D - maybe it's one of those tricky ones - she presented it but not at the Centennial Celebration? |
A skydiving owl? What a hoot!

Happy Holidays!
Name the only Chi Omega chapter ever to be installed on Christmas Eve. (*Hint* -- the year was 1913)
a.) Theta Chapter, West Virginia University b.) Eta Chapter, University of Michigan c.) Pi Alpha Chapter, University of Cincinnati d.) None ... that would be crazy to install a chapter at such a busy time of year! |
I'm guessing C, cuz Theta and Eta would've been installed one after another really early in the 1900s, so Pi Alpha sounds like it probably would be around 1913.
|
Re: Happy Holidays!

Pi Alpha, Univ. of Cincinnati was installed on Christmas Eve 1913. Let's see...Mary Love was S.H. then and probably was living in Cincinnati at the time. I bet that was why a Christmas Eve installation was feasable. |
A Question About Buildings?
Which former National President has a building named after her on a university campus?
a.) Jobelle Holcombe, Holcombe Hall, University of Arkansas b.) Elizabeth Dyer, Elizabeth Dyer Hall, University of Cincinnati c.) Kirk Bell Cocke, Cocke Women's Dorm, University of Alabama d.) Mary Ann Fruge', Fruge' Blue Jay Aviary, University of Mississippi |
I'm going with A - Holcombe Hall. I KNOW that is there because Carnation has talked about it before - and maybe had a class or a dorm room there????
And there is no "all of the above" answer so I think I'm in the clear on this one! |
Quote:
tricky, tricky! Here is a picture of Holcombe Hall: http://housing.uark.edu/halls/holcombe3.gif Holcombe Hall is home to 140 co-ed students and is an Authoring Your Life (Beyond the Freshmen Year) Hall. Holcombe is also home to the Office of International Students and Scholars. It was built in 1948 and was completely remodeled in the last decade. Holcombe is located on the north side of campus near the Law School and Mullins Library. It features a game room, a formal lounge, a piano lounge and a T.V. Room. The hall is air-conditioned and has an individual thermostat in resident rooms. Each room also has a micro/fridge and carpeted floors.Room Dimensions are typically 11'-9" (W) x 15'-9" (L). GUESS AGAIN, PLEASE... |
I'd like to guess B, simply because there's a Dyer Hall at University of Cincinnati and I don't remember learning about a Kirk Bell Cocke - Kirk Bell Howell, yes, but not K.B. Cocke. While I think the aviary would be cool and the name is cute (I like the rhyming), it just doesn't seem as plausible - which is probably why I'd be wrong......

(Kirk Bell Cocke was a former S.H. -- several years after her term ended, she married John Hassell & became Kirk Bell Hassell. She did attend the Univ. of Alabama and was a professor at F.S.U. for over 25 years, but no building bears her name.) (And sadly, no Blue Jay Aviary yet for Mary Ann Fruge'! *Hint* *Hint* Anyone listening from Ole Miss??!) |
wow, the interesting tidbits I was never aware of.....thank you for making me aware =) I truly appreciate any new Chi-O trivia.

Who wrote the following often-quoted saying:
Chi Omega friendship is Worth more than gold. It's not had for the asking, No place is it sold. It's not found in a store, Nor in a book on a shelf. You just have to be a Chi Omega yourself! a.) Dr. Charles Richardson, Founder, c. 1898 b.) Mary Love Collins, Delta Chapter (Dickinson), former S.H., c. 1929 c.) Dr. Pauline Wright Nichols Pepinsky, Phi Gamma Chapter (LSU), c. 1938 d.) Jean Mermoud Mrasek, Epsilon Gamma Chapter (Tulsa), in her installation speech as S.H., 2004 |
Well, considering my big wrote it to me (an altered version guess I should say - some of the wording was a bit different) when I was pledging in 95, I guess it can't be D.
I'm going with C - basically because she's the only one I've never heard of and I like her last name! |

What? A month wothout TRIVIA?
Time for another question...
Christine Thomas Barnicki, Editor of The Eleusis is an initiate of which chapter? a.) Alpha, University of Washington b.) Phi, University of Southern California c.) Alpha Beta, Auburn University d.) None - (She is not a Chi Omega Sister) |

"...scholarship before social obligations..."
As reported at Convention 2004, how many collegiate chapters were ranked #1 on their campuses among other NPC groups?

Heck, it's been so long since I asked the question -- I'm not sure of the answer! I think it was D...50 chapters.

New addition
What is the newest addition to the furnishings at the Chi Omega HQ in Memphis?
a.) an original oil painting by founder, Ina Mae Boles b.) a new Xerox machine c.) a sprinkler system for the Myth Garden d.) a bust of Elvis |
I'd like to guess B, just cuz.
It'd be way cooler if it was A, though |
IT IS A!!!!
I can't keep this exciting news a secret any longer! A generous Arkansas couple have recently gifted this fabulous 1904 painting to the HQ. It's called A Tea Party and signed Ina Boles. (The picture does not do it justice!)

Does anyone have any new trivia questions? I'd try to think of some, but I think everything interesting I know has already been a question.
