I don't know that it's necessarily their choice not to bid every open spot. Sometimes they match all the way to the bottom of their second bid list and that's it...unless they snap or COB they have that number of girls.

I agree though, you budget based on X number of active members per year....how do the smaller chapters keep up with the larger in terms of activities and such? That's probably why HQ is usually focused on making quota and the overall numbers in a chapter... lack of funds could really hurt a chapter!

I don't mean the ones who COB/COR or snap bid-- I'm talking about the ones who intentionally underinvite and are fine with not making quota. We budget based on approx. number of new members each fall-- without that, I can't even begin to imagine the refocusing of dues per member, cutting out non-essential events to cover necessary expenses, etc., and decline in sorority "quality of life." I am all for only bidding the must-haves (and I truly hope and do believe all of our sororities are bidding the ladies they want!), but it is a bit irresponsible to conduct membership selection this way-- you will end up having your solid stars drop when their dues increase by 20%.

I heard rumors of an ADPi chapter doing this in the past... not only is it frowned upon by our sorority, it doesn't make any sense financially.

Sorry! :) I thought you were just talking generally. I agree with you though....intentionally underinviting seems silly, both financially and for the well-being of the chapter. It seems to me that it indicates that something isn't quite right...either the chapter hasn't come together to be clear on what qualities they are looking for in a NM or that their returns are low after night 1 and continue to decrease. (This is just generally, clearly, I have no idea about any specific house in any rush) Either way, it doesn't make sense to do this intentionally. I know the new release figures force certain chapters to release a LOT of girls that they would usually love to keep, but in this situation it doesn't seem like that is happening.

Maybe the chapter has internal problems and they want to work on them first before bringing in a huge pledge class. Sometimes it's hard to get things like that worked out when you are worrying about the girls who weren't 100% into you, but were only 75% into you and you have to keep rushing them after they receive their bids. Just a thought. :)

I mean, a lot of us have had that experience of a girl at pref party who only wants A sorority, not YOUR sorority, and knowing we have to bid her because our butts will be in a sling if we don't make quota. And knowing we're going to have to babysit her for the next 6 weeks so she doesn't depledge. Get too many of these in the sorority, and people will self-terminate and numbers will go down anyway.

That's so true. There's not many things worse for a pledge class than a few NMs who are really sad/mad to be there.

It's so interesting to do in intentionally though...we always had a saying at my alma mater that it only took one good/bad rush to change a chapter for the next few years.

This is probably truer at small schools than large...

but some years, you look at the girls who are rushing, and just no one fits.

That doesn't mean you don't take a class - you COB your friends and do that - but there can be rushes where the group of rushees available just doesn't include anyone who would fit in your chapter. That doesn't mean they're "bad" or anything like that, they just don't fit, and vice versa.

I know this topic is way off of carnations intentions so I am going to put my reply in the "recruitment vs rush" thread (yea I know it is kind of off of the topic there to but it is closer there then here)

We could only have quota additions from the girls who had Gamma Phi on their final list but were not otherwise matched...if they'd had AXiD on their list in any spot that is where they would have gonesince we did -happily - fill quota quickly. The quota additions are a real plus for us.

We have an awesome pledge class - including one of my girls I wrote a rec for:) - and I could not be more thrilled!!!

Our girls there have worked their cute little behinds off and now their hard work is paying off. I don't mean to sound defensive - I just hate to see the efforts of our Auburn girls disparaged in any way....sorry.:o

Oh I TOTALLY agree with this. I am a firm believer (though I know a few who disagree) that a sorority's success in all aspects ultimately goes back to recruitment.

If you recruit poopy PNM's(grade risks, behavior risk, will take a bid from anyone for the sake of just being greek, only joining to have something on their resume, etc) you'll start the trend of a poopy chapter over the next few years and then spend the next few years getting out of the funk and getting back to the top. I've seen this happen with several chapters on several campuses close to me.

Just FYI - not many schools do this. On some campuses, it is left up to the individual chapters to release their own information.
