I think they did it on purpose to test the network's censorship rules. If it was indeed planned, but not for the above mentioned reason, then Janet would have worn one of those really tiny bras underneath that "just cover up appropriately".

Janet Apologizes, Says Super Bowl Stunt Went Too Far
 

One day after Janet Jackson's shocking Super Bowl halftime performance, the singer took responsibility for the breast-baring incident and said she never intended the stunt to go as far as it did.

"The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals," Jackson said in a statement released Monday (February 2). "MTV was completely unaware of it. It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended — including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL."

Jackson's performance shocked onlookers when Justin Timberlake — who was performing with her — pulled off a piece of Jackson's costume, revealing her right breast.

MTV, which produced the halftime show for CBS, issued an apology shortly after the show, calling the incident "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and ... inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance" Bowl.

Timberlake also apologized on Sunday, calling the incident "not intentional and regrettable."

On Sunday, Jackson's reps told MTV News that the singer apologized for the move, but the singer issued no public statement on the incident until Monday.

Seriously though, I totally agree with ZTAngel. I might add that I didn't understand why Janet was the central Super Bowl 1/2 time event! She hasn't had a hit in years - or released anything in years.

P.S. That sunburst thing on the nipple, OUCH! How could she wear that under a tight outfit without it like puncturing her breast?!?!

I turned to watch the half-time show and saw the whole stunt.
Of course it was planned. They had a reporter for The Rolling Stone mag on Gretta's show and he said the camera work was too precise for it not to be planned-along with some other things he noted. Sean Hannity said, sure Miss Jackson wakes up every morning and puts a pasty on...
No doubt in my mind or the FCC's.

They are currently debating whether or not to bar the duo from the Grammy Awards. AOL wants their money back. Viacom-who owns both CBS and MTV are fuming.

I was appalled. Not because of the act, but because of the venue. When I turn on MTV, I can expect lyrics and dance to be explicit. When I have my children watching a SPORTS EVENT on a NATIONAL broadcast station, I do NOT expect to see some silicone injected piece of flesh bouncing around like a studded basketball. I hope those two get their butts sued and are banned from anything and everything. I hope their sales drop because Moms and Dads refuse to give their kids money for the stinking CD's-Janet's by the way is due out in March. Will they postpone?

Ok, this is the way I see it...if we can watch 101 beer commercials with horses farting, dogs biting men in their crotches, a child nearly saying "Holy shhhhh", and Kid Rock w/ his flag antics then we shouldn't make Janet and Justin a scapegoat for the lack of morality during the superbowl.

Dionysus, in a way, THAT'S the whole point! Things are just getting flat out tasteless. Why do we need a crotch biting dog to sell something or make us laugh?

This may very well be the straw that breaks the camels back.
The whole thing was marketed to 18 year old males. (I got that from my daughter and seconded by my Mom.) This is one of those times when a huge diversity of Americans settle down and watch the tube. Why didn't they take that into account? Like it or not, they were invited into our home. Such a display was not expected or appreciated.

Just got back from the parade and rally in Boston. So much fun!

Your points about kids, broadcasting and CBS are correct.

Plus, that kind of lewd stuff can draw heavy fines and even loss of station licenses.

It's against the law.

Looks like Grammy viewers won't see Janet Jackson's nipple -- or any other part of her. A day after the Recording Academy said that she would still appear on the telecast, TV's ''Access Hollywood'' and ''Entertainment Tonight'' are both reporting that she's been disinvited from Sunday's awards ceremony. There's no official word yet from CBS or the Recording Academy, but Jackson publicist Stephen Huvane told CNN on Wednesday: ''We don't think she's going to go.''

It's not clear whether Jackson's disinvitation is connected to her Super Bowl stunt, for which the FCC could fine CBS millions of dollars. (Jackson has stated that network executives didn't know about the stunt in advance.) After all, Justin Timberlake, who was Jackson's striptease partner, is still scheduled to perform (he's also in contention for five Grammy awards). According to ''ET,'' the ostensible reason has to do with the ailing Luther Vandross. Jackson was initially slated to introduce a tribute to the singer, but since he's too ill to attend, Jackson was told her services won't be needed, ''ET'' reports. Vandross' publicist told ''ET'' he was unaware that Jackson was to introduce the tribute. And in any case, the homage, featuring Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, and Richard Marx, is still scheduled to go on.

When reached late Wednesday by EW.com, reps for both CBS and the Recording Academy declined to comment.

The NFL's taken JC Chasez out of this Sunday's Pro Bowl halftime show lineup.

Granted, the guy hasn't had an illustrious career so far like his former bandmate...but come on, what's he gonna do, expose himself? :rolleyes:

I agree that this is ridiculous. JC isn't going to flash anybody. Ok, his shows can get a little risque, but I'm sure he would have toned it down for the Pro Bowl. Especially after what just happened. Come on now.
