OK. To clear this up again:

(2) Your badge may well have gone into *space.* I know Sigma Kappa had a badge go into space, and -- which shuttle was it that burned on reentry? -- a GPhiB recently was IN space.

The Columbia......Laurel Blair Clark. Her badge, however DID NOT go into space with her. It was presented to our Foundation Director by her husband at our convention in Chicago. So if you ever see it on ebay, you will know that it is either fake or was stolen.

I can't speak to details, but my understanding is that the appropriateness of continued membership in the PFA has been a matter of considerable discussion at national levels, and probably will continue to be. It is a rather complex issue for a variety of reasons, and no one wants to take action without a lot of forethought.

It should be noted, however, that the PFA defines eligibility rather generally: fraternities that are "identified by, or related to a field of study or common interest." (My emphasis.) Even though we voted 20 years ago to rid our governing documents of "professional" language and return to our roots as a social fraternity, it could be said we still meet the PFA definition since we are identified by a common interest in music. But like I say, I'm pretty sure the discussions will continue.

As for the Kappa Kappa Psi joint-statement, I can't remember exactly when it was issued (although I think it was many years ago), but the part you quoted, while perhaps accurate at the time -- and arguably accurate even now, given the PFA definition of "professional fraternity" as noted above and the fact that the statement says "as defined" by the PFA -- indeed appears misleading given our current status.

Having read this thread as much from the beginning as I have time for (meaning I skimmed most of the really long posts), I'd like to add two points.

1) As much as I would like to say Sandra Day O'Conner or any other female Stanford graduate (1947-1978) was a member of a GLO, unless it was an academic GLO, not one woman is. Sororities were banned from campus in 1944 - all members would not have immediately graduated, thus the lag time until 1947 when I believe the last of the women graduated. Theta, Pi Phi, Kappa and DG were re-introduced to campus in 1978, though from what I gather they were not officially recognized by the university itself until 1980. Tri-Delt came back in 1984 and Chi Omega came back in 1991. :) Unfortunately, DG closed in 1999. :(

2) I would love to claim Cybil Shepard as a sister, I cannot find her chapter of initiation and she is not listed on the website, thus I would conclude she is not a Chi Omega

I'm pretty sure the other women listed as Chi Omega alumnae really are sisters. I would like to include an up and coming designer in the soon-to-be-famous category: Liz Pineda, a Chi Omega from UCLA. She has a boutique in Madrid and if you go, you absolutely must check it out.

Edited for grammar.

The Joint Statement with Kappa Kappa Psi, was finalized less than a year ago sometime during the middle of the Spring of 2004 so it's actually rather new. I know because I remember seeing on our National Listserve a message from our National Council stateing a recently agreed upon Joint-Statement had been posted.

There has to be a misunderstanding. I went back and checked -- the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia-Kappa Kappa Psi Joint Statement was published in the December 1973 issue of our magazine, The Sinfonian. That would mean it is at least 10 years older than our formal decision to return to our roots as a social fraternity.

ETA: Since posting on this subject , I learned that Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia has, in fact, withdrawn from the Joint Statement with Kappa Kappa Psi.

I've heard from different sources that Carly Simon is an AGD. I sent her an email asking, but it hasn't been answered so....

I heard that Carole King was. I think they're pullin' our chains ;) .

They changed the list recently - wasn't Betty White from the Golden Girls on it???

The had the famous Alpha Gams up since the last revised website (the red one) in 2001, but Betty was never on it. There was talk about how she's a DZ, but she's not a DZ either.

I think the reason HotDamnImAPhiMu (btw, that's a great name) called them "secret" letters is that nobody but the people initiated into that GLO know the significance of the letters, ergo, they are secret.

scuthetagirl 08-20-2004 04:37 PM

Barbara Bush II

I never knew that Barbara Bush II (Laura and W's daughter) was a Theta---I always knew that Jenna was, but I'd never heard any rumblings about Barbara being one, but I looked it up on the internet and found an article saying she was. That's hot. Just wanted to say.

True. I thought she thought they were secret letters as in no one knows what they are, but if you look at even a picture of one of our badges you'd know what the letters were, given the organization.
