Any Ole Miss ladies know what is appropriate to wear to water parties this weekend? Many of the girls are saying they are wearing Nike shorts and t-shirts. As the old saying goes: you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Don't you think that something even just slightly nicer would be better? Maybe shorts and nice shirt??? Or will you stand out in a negative way if you go against the tide?

Any suggestions?

rebelpnm 09-04-2013 04:17 PM

Our Gamma Chi's said shorts and any color t-shirt that is not white, as that is what the actives are wearing. They really seemed to stress the casualty of water parties to us. I know all of the girls on my floor are planning on wearing that.

Rebelpnm is correct. There is a trend towards removing frills and making Recruitment more about making personal connections.

Otherwise known as everything ancient is new again.

Still, Nike shorts? Personally, I think I'd go with something more like capris or something.

MaryPoppins 09-05-2013 12:23 AM

Capris might be a little bit hot for day time wear on Sunday (detailed forecast towards bottom):

Ole Miss Weather

DubaiSis 09-05-2013 12:41 AM

There are a lot of shorts out there that aren't Nike shorts. I would go ahead and wear a super cute pair of shorts that you would NOT wear to work out in. You are going to a party, after all. A cute pair of shorts that have an actual inseam would seem appropriate.

pnm13 09-05-2013 12:57 AM

Would a casual sundress be too much? I feel like for during the heat of the day a light dress would be comfortable. Opinions?

MU2Driver 09-05-2013 07:53 AM

Wouldn't do it if I were you. "Everyone" will be wearing Nike shorts and t-shirts. I think you will feel self conscious even with capris as previously mentioned, and especially with a sundress.

amIblue? 09-05-2013 08:18 AM

Do NOT wear Norts to any recruitment-related event at Ole Miss. Just no.

carnation 09-05-2013 08:18 AM

amIblue?: Do you now attend, or have you attended Ole Miss recently?

OleMissGlitter 09-05-2013 10:52 AM

Two things!

1. Water Parties are a quick "party" and it is very CASUAL! It's merely an open house to see the houses and meet a few women in a quick time. So in my opinion, I wouldn't try to be too different than what everyone else is wearing. I know recruitment is all about being yourself but I wouldn't try to swerve too much from the norm for this round! I think you will see lots of Nike Shorts and t-shirts with comfy shoes! The sorority women will be wearing something similar as well!

Thank you so very much, OleMissGlitter!

It really needs to be said that the entire Greek system at Ole Miss seems to be rolling out the red carpet for Alpha Delta Pi, and it just thrills me to the soul!

No, but I am very familiar with how recruitment works at SEC schools. Appearances DO matter. Heck, appearances matter at ANY school.

I will defer to OleMissGlitter regarding Norts. If she says they are common, then wear them.

That being said, IMO Norts are sloppy gym wear. You can be casual and comfortable without wearing sloppy gym clothes. As competitive as Ole Miss is, there is no way in hell I would advise anyone to not look their best. My advice would be a nice pair of khaki or black shorts (casual but not sloppy). At the end of the day, it's not my recruitment, so it really is no skin off my nose either way. Kappa is going to get a great group of girls there, whether they are be-Norted or be-shorted. YMMV.

CMDelta 09-07-2013 10:18 AM

My DD went thru at Ole Miss last year and she said the MAJORITY of girls will wear Nike shorts! You do NOT want to wear anything other than some type of casual shorts because you don't want to be "that girl" in a sundress or capris.

But I am guessing if you wore Puma shorts (ports?) instead of Nike shorts that your invite list would be cut by half. :p

Yes, probably best for PNMs to take advice from people who are familiar with recruitment on the campus in question, and best for those who aren't to say so when issuing advice.

I was surprised that Nike shorts are also shown as an example for the Philanthropy round:

What to Wear: NPC Recruitment 2013

http://dos.orgsync.com/org/umgreeks/npcrecwear

I wouldn't recommend these for recruitment at my Alma Mater -- but I guess it goes to show how trends can differ from campus to campus.

SigKapSweetie 09-07-2013 02:24 PM

I am not from Ole Miss, but I know a young lady there who says she would not dream of wearing anything BUT norts to the water parties as a PNM. If it really worries you, perhaps you could toss a pair of nice shorts and sandals into your tote so that you will have them with you in case you feel underdressed when you get there.

DubaiSis 09-07-2013 02:40 PM

A t-shirt 14 sizes too big and dumpy shorts? When I was growing up, my Mom had 1 rule about how I was allowed to dress in public. It had to be FLATTERING. And this was the 80's so there were some weird ass clothes out there.

No, I didn't go to Ole Miss, but AGAIN, I think there is room between what appears to me as the clothes a girl rolled out of bed in and pretentious/over-done.

(Blast online stores that protect their images!) So here are some links of some shorts that NOBODY would call over-done. And the t-shirts fit.

http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do...&pid=453764012

I fully appreciate turning down the $1000 budgets on clothes for rush, but I think there's been some whiplash here. The same girls are going to show up for the official introduction to these chapters looking like that and in a few short weeks they're going to be going to football games in virtual cocktail wear? Somewhere along the line there has been a disconnect.

lol, hey I agree with you. Perhaps this is a trend toward more comfort and less wardrobe pressure?

On the other hand, it took me a while to grow accustomed to some other trends that came along -- like cowboy boots worn with cute dresses. And some girls at Bama have been dressing far more casually for games -- like football jerseys and jeans.

But some trends I'll never accept. I'll never see a tattoo I think is cute. Never. Ever.

Normal is only defined by what you're used to.

Dressing up for games was fun. Seriously. There is nothing cooler than a sundress on a hot day.

lol. When I was in school, we wore fall dresses and skirts (with panty hose even). Because it was fall (never mind that the weather wasn't). And for homecoming, we might up the ante with a wool blazer (great place to pin a fat mum).

A little bourbon in the game cup of cola and dirty ice was almost a necessity to survive the game.

I remember hearing rumors that students at Florida wore cut-offs and halter tops to games, and wondering why we were so stupid.

Only if they don't have a date.
Plenty of times I'd see girls in the stadium on a homecoming Saturday dressed in full wool skirt, tall leather boots, belted wool sweater - the the temp was 90 degrees. SO glad I was in the band and had a uniform!!

If the t-shirt was the french cut, tight variety, then someone would be complaining about how the bigger/bustier girls are being discriminated against.

Well a lot about that changed too. Girls don't need a date to go to the game or even a frat party anymore.

That seems like a good change. I wouldn't have been caught dead in Bryant-Denny without a date. Or at a frat party with a group of girls.

I saw lots of this yesterday. Good ol' Big Ten football. It was all about the denim shorts and tank tops. However, they were very cute tank tops. ;) In fact, I saw a couple of sorority tank tops that were adorable.

However, I am disturbed by the high waisted jean shorts. They look like someone took a pair of Mom jeans and put them off. They really only flatter stick thin girls. Are Mom jorts in style in other parts of the country?

newtoolemiss 09-08-2013 07:43 PM

How were he water parties? How many girls came through? What's next?
Go Rebs. Hotty toddy!

You've got approval on that one! I used to tease that the ONLY tatoo that I would consent to get would be Soundex on my one palm, just to make it easier to research. That was generally received with the seriousness it deserved.

DubaiSis 09-08-2013 08:32 PM

I'm seeing the mom jorts in CA, high waist SUPER short and tight. I want to give them a tug and put them where they belong. but that would be assault so, you know, I don't :)

Registration ends at Midnight, so all we know at the moment is that it's 1200+ PNMs. For some women we knew that they were coming on a certain round, but others were a complete surprise because registration is not yet over. The rounds today started at 1:00 and ended just before 7:00, Whew! Everyone was so excited to meet the PNMs!

In 17 days, the Panhellenic sponsored C.A.R.E. Walk will take place on September 26th, then Panhellenic Convocation takes place on Sunday the 29th. Tuesday October 1st will be the first day of Philanthropy Rounds.
