I actually have a copy of the Sorority Handbook by Ida Shaw Martin (from my college roommate's grandmother's stuff, if you remember that story). That's where I found the open motto thing and also the specific type of white rose. There's lots of really cool information about all kinds of orgs in there.

Since it's probably unlikely that there are many of those floating around, you might be interested to know that it's online (6th ed.) on google books. Here's the link if you're interested:

The original open motto was, "Let us pursue the honorable." Not knowing Greek, I wonder if ta kala diokomen could have several translations, and therefore it has morphed (for lack of a better word) over the years.

My father, who is from Greece, said that the motto actually means "we pursue the good things."

It definitely was gussied up to our current translation.

BTW, my father used to tease my chapter sisters about their pronunciation. The Southerners had that twang, "Taw kawlah deh-oh-koh-men" which bothered the heck out of him. But hey, he had an accent too! :)

Leslie Anne -- I know I'm slow to look at it, but that whole chapter naming thing you posted was amazing. Thanks for sharing!!

What's the answer to this, Leslie Anne?

I wish that this thread would become more active again! I loved hearing all of the trivia and history about Kappa Delta. I am a HUGE nerd when it comes to KD history...but I am not ashamed to admit it!!

Here's my (belated) Founder's Day trivia bump! It's been almost a year since Leslie first asked this question... what's the answer?!?

Leslie Anne 11-01-2008 11:25 AM

OMG. I'm so sorry. I can't remember where I found that tidbit of information but I'll try to find it today and post the answer.

Okay, I'm back and I found the answer. A Founder's Day message has been published in The Angelos by the National President every year since 1931. :)

Anyone want to post a new question?

Leslie Anne 11-03-2008 02:16 PM

New Question!

To get things started again I'm tossing out another question.

When was Kappa Delta's first convention held?

SydneyK 11-03-2008 02:19 PM

1903?

Leslie Anne 11-03-2008 02:39 PM

Ding ding ding! You are correct. Nice goin' Sydney. :)

SydneyK 11-03-2008 04:37 PM

Thanks, Leslie Anne.

Next question:
What scholarship is awarded to a KD pursuing a graduate degree in the field of health care?

kdizzy 11-03-2008 05:37 PM

Kailash, Mona, & Anila Jain Scholarship!

KΔEtaMu 11-07-2008 01:11 AM

Hey everyone! so I just read this whole thing because I am super interested because I am one of the founding sisters of my *soon to be* Eta Mu Chapter at GCSU! we will become an official chapter November 15 and I am so excited :D
It is really fun learning random tidbits of KD history!
