Hmmm... are people ready for this? :) It's actually called Southern Vernacular English (SVE) and it is not "slang." It is, in fact, a dialect as you state. And, what people consider "ebonics" is actually another dialect of English called African American Vernacular English (AAVE). Both of these dialects are structured and are both VERY correct. The ONLY reason these dialects are not acceptable in schools and what are considered "formal" environments is because Americans traditionally consider "Standard English" to be the formal dialect of English.

"The Oakland resolution declared that Ebonics was not English, and was not an Indo-European language at all, asserting that the speech of black children belonged to "West and Niger-Congo African Language Systems". This claim was quickly ruled inconsistent with current linguistic theory, that AAVE is a dialect of English and thus of Indo-European origin. Furthermore, the differences between modern AAVE and Standard English are nowhere near as great as those between French and the Haitian Creole language, the latter of which is considered a separate language. The statement that "African Language Systems are genetically based" also contributed to widespread incredulity and hostility. Supporters of the resolution later stated that "genetically" was not a racist term but a linguistic one.

NOTE: Southerners (even transplants) of all ethnic backgrounds use "y'all". I feel that Ebonics is a moot point for this word, which was the original subject of this hijack.

I could also ask how you are helping Alpha Phi Omega by belittling every brother who asserts their right to refer to it as a fraternity and contribute to any posts with their thoughts about APO as a fraternity.

It is a fraternity now, it was a fraternity in 1925.

Ebonics does not exist. It was created by those who did not understand that what they were hearing was a dialect called AAVE.

The difference between slang and dialect is important. Slang is informal speech that serves to demarcate a group of people (could be cultural, professional, etc).

Dialect has its own idiomatic expressions, grammar (this is most significant...for example: in SVE and AAVE, generally the subject/verb agreement is reversed from Standard English), vocabulary and pronunciations. It is a sub-category of a standard language that has the potential of becoming its own language.

Why dont You realize, It Is Not Your Fraternity, it is many Peoples as You tried to aptly point out. But, You are making it even worse.

You Do Not seem to realize, there is a difference between Greeks, Social and Service. We all "TRY" to respect each other and Your Shirt doesnt help.:confused:

There are many greek lettered clubs with various purposes,
most of them noble. Not all are in the realm of the traditional
social fraternity. Not all have a hundred members and a five
million dollar house. But the similarity is not with them, and I
think there is a hierarchy of values. A Kappa Sig can be an APO
but he generally favors the wider purposed one over the other.
Why so much defensiveness, such ignorance, such hatred? Take
a look at yourselves, y'all may be hypocrites...ebonics and all.
