That is the other one I was trying to think of...I bet you are right!

skerbow 02-10-2004 02:14 PM

Nope. try again. man, didnt really think this one would be that hard. *sees everyone scramble for their alpha manuals.*

Adelphean 02-10-2004 02:41 PM

How about...

'The Chronicle'....?

I had to look in my Alpha book, but I'm still not sure b/c all mine says is....

"The Chronicle is the oldest publication of Alpha Delta Pi. Original editions were hand written accounts dating back to the 1850's. Today, The Chronicle communicates the highlights of Grand Council meeting and includes news and other topics of interest."

skerbow 02-10-2004 02:57 PM

oh Wow...yes that is correct! I didn't think the books would have different writing. What year were initiated?

Adelphean 02-10-2004 04:15 PM

Alpha class of 02, but I was inititated in Jan 03...

My book has a lot of different writing in it from what our current Alpha class books have.

skerbow 02-10-2004 05:03 PM

Interesting...i wonder what the 04 manuals say?

FirstAndFinest 02-10-2004 09:17 PM

I found my pledge manual, and the page that describes the Chronicle is dated 9/81. (I'm not quite that old, tho...)
"The Chronicle is the official esoteric publication of the sorority, being printed periodically during the year and containing updated information. It had its beginning in 1851 but was discontinued in 1897, resuming publicaiton as a secret newsletter in 1916. The Chronicle took on a newspaper format in 195- and is now an open piece of journalism."

New question...

When was Jewel Degree developed, and why is it called Jewel Degree? (No specifics of what it is, just why the developers called it that)

Everyone get our their Alpha books!

honeychile 02-11-2004 10:18 PM

I don't know the "when", but I know that it was named for Jewel Davies Scarborough (and boy, I hope I didn't mess up her name!).

adpiucf 03-23-2004 04:07 AM

skerbow 03-24-2004 12:10 PM

Adelphean 03-24-2004 03:05 PM

Ahhhh... it's in my Alpha book, but now I can't find it...
I'm going to go look for it now. When I find it I'll let ya'll know the answer.

honeychile 03-25-2004 11:49 PM

I still don't know the year (my Sisters book is at my house, I'm still at my mama's), but I do know that
a) Jewel Degree commemorates the graduation from being an active Alpha Delta Pi to an alumna;
b) It's named for Jewel Davis Scarborough (I think I spelled that right);
c) I have no idea when this started other than after about 1920?

skerbow 03-27-2004 01:22 AM

Okay, i read "Sisters" and Volume II & III of the Loyally and could not find a date any where, or the history of our badge. Grrrr!!!!! Can someone please answer this one??

FirstAndFinest 03-27-2004 05:35 PM

Here's what my pledge manual states:

In the section about Grand Presidents-

Jewel Davis Scarborough
During her term as Grand President (1913-1917), there was the appointment of a committee to prepare an Alumna degree (later to be named the Jewel Degree in honor of Mrs. Scarborough.

Now You're an Alumna:
Jewel Degreee... was written by members of Rho Chapter, Boston University after the 1915 Convention authorized such a degree. At the time the ceremony was adopted, nationally, [Mrts. Scarborough] was Grand President.

That's not a real precise answer, though. Who asked this question, anyway?! ;)
