But isn't this often true for our own organizations? We just had a mini-crisis here where no one knew (or wanted to disclose) various methods of taking care of it. When I went through our National Bylaws and policies, I found a few disciplinary actions that no one knew about because "we never had to do those." :rolleyes: Of course, there's a difference between a school superintendent and a college sorority, but I feel like there's always an option hidden away somewhere no one knows--or wants to talk--about.

What brats. I hope the ones responsible get punished by having their admissions revoked.

Hey, I just noticed this thread was here and I haven't had time to read through the whole thing....

There's a FIJI guy in my philosophy class that went to Glenbrook North. He acted like the whole thing was pretty funny and that it's gone on for years and absolutely no one has cared.

So I thought that was interesting. I haven't been keeping up with the news surrounding the issue at all, however.

The girl who asked for an injunction is supposedly being allowed to take her AP psychology test at GBS today. How ironic that the GBS AP psychology classes spent lots of time last week talking about the psychology behind the situation! I hope that it doesn't create a disruptive environment for the GBS kids who are taking the test!

Oooh........a 10 day suspension is ruining the girl's life? :rolleyes: Well, if that is all it takes....

They should be glad that is the only punishment they are receiving. (So far, I guess?)

This girl, who's named in the Chicago Tribune, was there but didn't do anything besides put paint and syrup in their hair. Why should she be denied the right in taking her AP tests? I can understand that they're suspending anyone caught on tape wearing a jersey, but considering she was one of the ones comforting them and trying to help, I think suspension is enough.

Please try to be accurate in what you say....out of the 30 girls that have been suspended about 7 or 8 were the physcial, violent ones. 2 of them were involved w/ the feces thing. Don't assume b/c someone was suspended that every person there was involved in the ass kicking (I know that you're pretty much gulity if you don't step in to stop it, lets not get into that again, lol, I'm just saying that especially with all the news stories available, there's no reason to perpetuate false information.

What I want to know is what they're doing about the kids that already graduated that were there.
The girl that brought the baseball bat graduated from GBN last year. She was the first girl in GBN history to get pregnant and go to school up until her due date. She may have not even graduated for all I know, but I would think a bigger story would be not what is happening to the seniors, but the graduated losers who had no business being there in the first place?

I'm pretty sure there's laws against seeing a crime being committed (like hazing) and not doing anything to stop it.

I think every single person that was there that day and participated even in the slightest should be punished equally with the rest of them. I don't care if one of them was comforting a girl as she was being beaten or made to eat feces - she still didn't stop it and that's just as sick and actually doing it.

This is the first time I've chimed in on this subject... i find it sick. I went to a private all-girls high school in chicago and this type of behavior NEVER happened there.

We can hope that when the criminal charges are filed, they get what they deserve.

Friends of my family, when their kids were in high school, witnessed a fight, but did nothing to stop it. The loser ended up in the hospital, and the parents of the witnesses ended up in court - they were sued for not stopping the fight for 25,000 each (I think there were five or six families, this was back in 1981-2) - and the family of the losing fighter WON.

There are more than simple criminal damages - the civil damage fallout from this should be very interesting indeed....

Maybe his daughter should have thought about that BEFORE she participated in something stupid like that :mad: This makes me so mad!!! :mad: :mad: It just infuriates me that these girls no matter how much or how little were INVOLVED IN THE SITUATION and DID NOTHING TO STOP IT.. and yet do not want to be held accountable. It just makes me sick.

Accountability is something they are going to have to learn in life SOMETIME, and since they obviously haven't got that by now, I think they should be held accountable.

Reasons for Suspension
 

Just to clarify...the school suspended the student for violating school rules. Here's the language from the GBS student handbook, I'd assume that the GBN language is similar, if not identical (the taxpayers wouldn't want to pay two lawyers to write the same thing):

The school administration is authorized to suspend and/or recommend expulsion in cases of gross disobedience or misconduct that occur on or off campus, including such conduct that occurs on school buses, at bus stops, and while students are traveling to or from school or school bus stops; at school sponsored events and activities connected with the school program; and at any other time such action is necessary for the safety and supervision of students.

Misconduct includes, but is not limited to the following:

1. Violation of public law, such as theft, arson, assault and battery, destruction of property, gambling and hazing.

I think it is also important to realize that these kids will be able to complete their education and receive their GBN diplomas--but not the privilege of spending their last days in high school participating in all the traditions. This punishment won't ruin their lives. The kids who get charged--that's another story but they don't appear to have been on a good path anyway.

The school had to take action because this particular tradition has to stop. If last year's powder puff got rough, and the rough ones from that group showed up at this one...then next year this year's Seniors joined last year's Seniors, even worse things could happen.

I think the reason I'm so upset by this is because my sister died while she was in high school--of natural causes, but very suddenly. I am so aware of how fragile life really can be, even though my teen-age daughter thinks she's immortal. I've been a lurker on these boards trying to get comfortable with her interest in joining a sorority--the reaction to this event here makes me feel she won't be any less safe in college than she was in high school!

If the parents that witnessed the fight were doing things like cheering them on or something like that, then maybe, but to simply take them to court because they didn't stop the fight is bull-ish.

I would not be comfortable stepping in and stopping a fight simply because I could get hurt, stabbed, knocked out, etc. in the process :eek: I know of too many instances where people who have tried to break up fights end up hurt or killed themselves.
Now if we talking a bout 2 little kids, then yes, but high school kids and older? Ummm, nope. I would just call the police on them.

Probably would have gotten sued either way.

I've heard of people who got sued because they did CPR wrong and something happened to the one being helped. You can bet your bottom $ that if they had stood there and let the person choke or whatever, they would have been sued for that, too!

One of my college professors used to say, "There's no such thing as a free lunch." People like that are proving him wrong!

OK, among all the other stuff, I'm in awe of this. Does GBN just have a very low fertility rate, or do the girls have to quit as soon as they find out they have a bun in the oven?
