I love AOII so much and has been a huge part of my life since I joined, but if I didn't go AOII I would've probably not joined any other house on campus because I really didn't feel comfortable there. Off campus probably Pi Phi because I met a lot of awesome ones at convention.

I think the whole "rush" thing is interesting, cuz it's so different from the way NPHC groups operate. We don't give out bids or anything like that, either you want to be down with a particular org or you don't. Out of curiosity, if you went through a rush process how do you have a love for your org? Does it develop overtime like an arranged marriage? I don't mean to be rude, I really want to know. With NPHC groups, you research all the groups first, then decide who you want to be down with, and either you're down or you're not. So, can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.

Well, I fell in love with the ladies of AOII at once. I just felt like one of them and they were so easy to talk to. During our 'rush', we go through 6 days. We go to each house and meet the girls for an hour or so and talk to various ladies and just get to know them and about their organization. Like I said, I fell in love at once and knew exactly where I wanted to be, but it was our preference tea *ritualistic* ceremony that caught me. Granted I didn't choose another house, but I do get along with girls from 2 of the 4 others on our campus, but I didn't feel as if I belonged as I did with AOII.

I am new, and I find this thread really interesting.
If I hadn't gone pi phi, I would most likely go ADPi because I prefed there. For the other question about loving your organization....the best way i would even attempt to explain it is this:
you obviously like your chapter when you join it, but i dont think you can truly love it until you have seen all it has to offer, and really made a commitment to it.

Hi Frat!

Enlightenment06,
to answer your first question, if I didn't pledge a NPHC sorority, I'm not really sure what other sororities exist. However, I used to work with a girl who was a Delta Gamma. We really got along well. Since that's the only sorority I know about, I would chose them.

Re: if your chapter wasn't there...

If Beta were not at my school, I'd start a Phi Delt of Sigma Chi Chapter. So much history, gotta love it.

OK I have a question for everyone. If (and this is a horrible scenario, I know) your GLO didn't exist or if you just didn't have them where you went, what other sorority or fraternity would you have gone to? Now we all know we all adore our GLO and wouldn't want to be anything else, but what if???

An excellent question.

As is obvious from this thread, most of us who join NPC or NIC organizations do it because we meet the people in the groups, we like the people in the groups, and we can see ourselves being happy with the people in our sorority or fraternity. After we choose this group, we learn the history, and we learn to appreciate the organization from the experiences we have from it.

From this thread, it appears that most people who join NPHC groups know the kind of organization they want to belong to, and learn to love the people in it because of the experiences the organization has given them with their sisters or brothers . . . most NPC/NIC groups are the opposite -- the majority of us know the kind of people we want to spend time with, and we learn to love the organization because of the people it has brought us to, you know?

Of course, I can't speak for everyone, and there are members of NPC groups out there who might have only considered one group -- I know a girl whose mom was a Kappa Kappa Gamma, and this girl was going to join Kappa or nothing at all. But I think that for the most part, it works the way I described above.

I preffed Kappa, and had such a huge Kappa influence in my life that there's still a key on my wall at my parents' home! So, I guess I would have gone Kappa.

Phi Mu wasn't at my school, but I've enjoyed the company of every Phi Mu lady I've met. Same with AZD, now that I think of it - but the pink would have probably swayed me! ;)

honeychile

please note: I am playing this as if ADPi didn't exist! I was bonded to ADPi from the very first time we met!

FAB*SpiceySpice 04-17-2003 05:38 PM

It makes me so happy to see so many of yall saying such nice things about Phi Mu! :D

As for me, if Phi Mu had not been an option I would definately have wanted to either be a Theta, DG, or Alpha Chi on our campus. Theta's here are a top house and they win just about everything, I have a lot of friends in DG, and our Alpha Chi's are just the nicest girls and everytime I see them perform at RAMS or Fling or anything they always look AMAZING! They have some serious talent!

Before I got to college I wanted to be an ADPi b/c all my friends who graduated the year before me were ADPi's...so had I gone elsewhere I think I would have wanted to be an ADPi. :D

Opie25 04-17-2003 06:06 PM

If I weren't a member of Phi Delta Theta I would have been:

on undergrad campus: Lambda Theta Phi, INC.
on Grad campus: Sigma Alpha Epsilon, or Kappa Alpha Order

not on either campus: HMM...Beta Theta Pi maybe

AlphaGamDiva 04-17-2003 06:14 PM

without alpha gam, i would so totally be lost......

but, if there was no such thing as alpha gamma delta, i would have gone either sigma kappa or aopi.....my other pref choices. my sister is an aopi, so there's a connection there and everyone i talked with was really sweet....and i bonded really well with one particular sig kap when i went through who is now my "adopted sigma kappa big sis"......so. :)
DZ isn't on my campus....but a friend of mine from high school went DZ, and i have met some of her sisters and they are awesome (UK DZs are fabulous!!) :D

SDTSarah 05-28-2003 02:02 AM

I'm a little late, but I love this subject! I would have loved to be a DPhiE...they were second! I also loved Kappa.

Not on my campus: my aunt was an AChiO, one of grandmothers was a DG, my other grandmother was a Theta, and both of my cousins were Phi Mu! I also have a good friend who is a Chi O and one who is a Zeta. And I love Theta Phi Alpha because of the penguins! :D

Sororities rock.

The_Nash 05-28-2003 03:56 AM

kicked off

Had they not been kicked off the year before I got to school probably Sigma Nu or Sig Ep

KappaKittyCat 05-28-2003 11:13 AM

If KKG weren't here at Lawrence and I'd somehow been talked into panhellenic rush anyway, I'd probably be a KAQ. If not, I'd be a SAI. As it stands, I'm considering rushing SAI in the winter anyway.

If I'd have gone to UW-Madison, which was my other major school option, and somehow been talked into rushing there, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be a Kappa. I like to think that I'd be a DDD. All the TriDeltas I've met from Madison are fabulous ladies, and it seems like the chapter I'd fit in best with.

astroAPhi 05-28-2003 11:38 AM

Well, if Alpha Phi wasn't at Florida Tech, my one and only choice would have been Gamma Phi Beta. Well, then again, if Alpha Phi wasn't at Florida Tech, Sigma Kappa might have still be there (apparently campus wasn't strong enough for 3 sororities during the mid- to late-nineties).

I don't know much about Sigma Kappa, but I really admire the local philanthropy for Gamma Phi Beta... they work with the Hacienda Girls Ranch every summer. I almost went Gamma Phi because of that.

If I had gone to UIUC, my second choice, I'm not sure I would have gone Greek. It's such a huge system, with something like 30 sororities.

With all that's said and done though, I truly believe in Alpha Phi and think that God meant for me to join them. I truly believe in their aims and ideals, and have all my life.
