Yesterday went well without incident. She finds out today which houses invite her to the skit rounds. Keeping our fingers crossed. She was asked back to 9 houses for Phil round. I heard second cuts can be deep too, so we are hoping she has close to a full schedule today after cuts.

I learned it as "PEBCAK": Problem Exists Between Computer and Keyboard.

Also, "problem with the wetware".

My friend is from Los Angeles. She is rushing at U Alabama this week. She has recs at most houses and is a DG legacy. Will being out of state and not from the south penalize her? She has great grades & resume.

Out of state women DO get bids, but I find that they do have to be more open-minded. All PNMs should be, but it's more important when you don't have connections to chapters from camp, HS, etc.

Over 50% of PNMs placed at Alabama are from OOS. What do you think her chances are with that fact?

bamamom11 08-15-2012 07:59 PM

In 2011 50% of the freshman class was from out of state, with the highest percentage coming from Georgia, Florida, and Texas.
When my oldest daughter was a freshman in 2006 only 24% of students were from out of state.

PEBKAC = Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair. I've seen this acronym used in trouble tickets.

As one of my high school teachers used to say, "A computer is only as smart as the idiot putting in the information." Truer words...

Oh, you're right, I got it backwards :-)

You can look at the list of new members in each chapter from last year, and you will see that OOS girls are very well-represented (cities not followed by a state are in Alabama):

http://uanews.ua.edu/2011/08/ua-soro...-announced-12/

My observation in general has been (even from waaay back) that older chapters with in-state strongholds tend to have more in-state than OOS new members, while newer chapters may have more OOS than in-state.

I did a quick count of the Alpha Phi new members on that list, for instance, and found that about 36 of the 95 new members were in-state, so the majority of new members were OOS. Alpha Phi is a new group to UofA -- about 4 years old now.

the cuts actually weren't too deep.. they changed things up this year with adding a second day for skits so the cuts for pref (we have been warned) will be huge.. from 15 overall party slot times to 7 whereas before we went from 20 to 15.. best of luck to all :)

KyKKGviaFlorida...how's your PNM doing?

She is doing well and has a great attitude to boot! For the skit rounds, she was asked back to four houses (Phil day she had 9). She was bummed about a couple of houses that cut her. She has been the best student of Greek chat principles and felt that she had made some connections. But she is looking forward and is very greatful for what she does have. She has reported that TONS of girls have been cut completely or have dropped out. She feels lucky to have visited 4 this round and is very excited about 3 of the houses. I am hoping and praying that she gets a full card tomorrow for pref.

Let me ask a question for all of the bama advisors on here: what do you think the effect of adding an additional skit day has been? Up thread someone suggested that it means that the deepest cuts will be tomorrow. Any word on how many girls are still in rush or what the quota may be?
