Don't blame it on Ohio. Other schools are getting by without problems.

You're right, you're right. Miami seems to be cracking down quite a bit. Or maybe these things happen at other places but aren't punished as much? I don't really know I haven't ever heard of anything like this at my school but maybe it happens and is kept under wraps. I still don't understand why most of my generation of greeks think that the only way to have fun at a mixer/formal is to be wasted.

It's not just Greeks...it's people in general. I actually heard a report on the way into work this morning about how widespread this issue is. Apparently even Europe is having a hard time with binge drinking, even though most European families teach their children about drinking in moderation from an early age. The report said that heavy drinking by age 15 was much more prevalent in Europe than in the US, which really surprised me.

Since this is been shown to be a problem in Europe where there are no Greeks (well, no social fraternities/sororities:D), this seems to be more of a generational issue.

Agreed!

I can only speak for the chapter where I'm one of the advisors. There ARE adults at the formals, and I don't mean 22 year olds. Alums and their spouses/significant others typically are at the event greeting the bus as they arrive. Anyone who is perceived to be "over their limit" are put into a cab, at their own expense.

I'm not saying there are not drunks at the parties. I am saying that responsible adults are there to control the drunkeness. Even worse, when the advisors hear of issues even after the parties, it is handled swiftly and with purpose.

Example: we were getting ready for Senior Rededication at IRD (our Founder's Day) and I saw one of the other advisors having a "Come to Jesus" with two of the collegians. Even though we couldn't hear what was being said, the two girls were nearly in tears. A few weeks later I asked the advisor what happened and she said she overheard one of the other actives talking at the luncheon about the two girls that were drunk at the formal and she confronted them.

Even though you are chronologically an adult at 21, it doesn't mean your level of maturity has reached adulthood.

DDN posted the story a few hours ago about the Miami ZTAs:
http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/...or-740206.html

Excerpts:
"It was reported to the university that on April 23, while on a bus ride to an event, members of Miami’s Zeta Tau Alpha sorority allegedly allowed illegal possession and/or consumption of alcohol and discarded trash on the bus.
On the return trip to Oxford, passengers were alleged to have been unruly and harassed and threatened the bus driver."

"Zeta Tau Alpha sorority has been placed on disciplinary probation for two years, effective May 27, 2010 through May 30, 2012. During the first year of probation, May 30, 2010 to May 30, 2011, Zeta can hold no social events with alcohol nor hold an off-campus formal. In the second year, the chapter can resume social events with alcohol and its formal may be held off-campus."

I'm just gonna throw this out there...

With the other sororities and their situations, I can understand wanting to pre-game, get drunk, etc. I'm not condoning their behavior, but it's formal, and college kids want to have a good time, and they feel that consuming alcohol will help them do that.

... but who the hell feels the need to get drunk to go to the zoo?!

Katmandu 06-02-2010 09:24 AM

^^^ The Zoo was the location for their formal, so same situation.... pre-gaming for the party. Formals, charity events, etc. are often held at the zoo and the aquarium in Cinci, since they have large rooms available.

ASTalumna06 06-02-2010 09:27 AM

^^ Ok, that makes more sense! I was thinking it was just a sisterhood event or something.

OU's Pi Phi's are on probation now.

I never heard about the Zeta's at Miami! Crap!!

It almost looks like the chapters at Miami are trying to outdo each other in outrageous behavior. What they should be doing is taking advantage of the suspension of the troubled chapters' inability to rush to build their own organizations.

Umm, wow. Nice Panhellenic spirit. There are plenty of members of all these chapters who were innocent bystanders and are screwed for a year or two...and your response is "hot dog! More pledges for us!"

As a wise man said, don't laugh, it could happen to you.

MUSK81 06-17-2010 08:55 PM

Maybe so - but anyone who thinks other chapters won't try to make this work to their advantage is dreaming.

Perhaps. I've actually seen a lot of support (for one of the groups at least) on other websites.

Even if that is what happens, no need for an alumna who's older and should be wiser to post something encouraging it.

I wouldn't be surprised if many of the other chapters are saying, "Thank God we didn't get caught!"
