When there are numerous chapters to start (usually more than 10), I won't start reading a story until some chapters have already been cut. Otherwise, I can't keep track of everything, and to go back to re-read posts is annoying. Fortunately, I didn't waste my time reading the majority of this fictional story. Hell, I was too confused to try and read it, anyway. It wasn't until KSUviolet posted Day 1's six loooong posts together that I realized how ridiculous this was to start. Actually, I take that back... I realized it was ridiculous when eaglesblondie posted this (in her very first post):

What exactly online could show you that one sorority is "better" than another? Did I miss the big "#1" at the top of DDD's website? Or the gold star on Chi Omega's?

But still, thank you for telling us this. It was for our benefit, after all.

Obviously, experienced sorority members can detect deceptive stories by paying close attention to the details. Like many lies, there is often something that doesn't add up or a lack of research that shows through.

I went back and read the "sequined pantyhose" story I couldn't resist) and I picked up on how she kept saying that she made the most competitive cheer squad at her school, yet she had to "pray" they would catch her when they threw her up in the air. College cheerleaders most often have done competitive cheer and have gymnastics skills. They are not squeamish about the prospect of being tossed in the air- especially when surrounded by other experienced stunters and tumblers. It just didn't sound right. Oh, and the sequined pantyhose sounded downright bizarre. :)

Yeah, and maybe that's why I find it impossible to be outraged by this. How many people were in danger of really believing this story happened and how many of the people who believed it would have been more likely to benefit from "real" retro recruitment stories?

I don't even think you have to be knowledgeable about Greek life. Personally, I've never, outside of teen movies and middle school, heard one girl make repeated critical comments to another girl of the kind the mean girl in this thread made. Even if you knew zero about recruitment, that would have rung false, I think.

I also think most "real" people would have either offered more information about the school or would have stopped telling it when the early claims of falsehood came in. Going days without posting anything other than explanations about not posting and promises to continue seems pretty suspicious.

Anyway, I still think the story had some entertainment value, mainly because of its being outrageous. And people really can follow up a story with commentary so it's not as if the made up stories exist on GC unchallenged.

Exactly. The writing style is identical, the need for feedback is still there, and the join date and first post make it even more suspicious.

Some people just don't ever learn, do they?

ETA: UGA- our little attention starved faux-recruitment writer has started yet another thread! This time the houses are ice cream flavors.

Ooooh.

It does seem weird.

I leave town for a weekend and look how things fall apart!! haha

Great ending to an increasingly tedious story. When I want something to kill time with, at least make it move at a pace that is quicker than GLACIAL!! hint hint ice cream girl...

UGAalum94 05-05-2009 05:56 PM

Perhaps we should make a new forum rule that all retro recruitment treads have to be posted in three days or they get deleted.

The fiction writers will at least have to work ahead.

O. M. G.

It's all rather Earp-ish too. Continuing to come back but not even attempting to change the dead giveaways like writing style or the blatant begging for attention. "Help me pick the flavors/teams/colors." "I've been DYING to write my story."

Maybe this is time for ALL retro stories to die. They were kinda fun for a while to read the experiences of regular posters that we've "gotten to know" through their other board contributions. But for randoms who are just coming in? It just opens lots of doors for perps.

italiachicaaa 05-05-2009 06:06 PM

I'd be the first one to point out if the ice cream thread was false... lol
[i seriously WISH i had the time to write fake rush stories]

It's my real recruitment story... I have another "real" name on GC, but I made a new one so that it wasn't ridiculously easy to find out my campus and my GLO.

Sorry if you guys think it's fake, and that's kinda insulting that you think it is- this rush story is pathetic!

I actually had ten flavors in mind, but I thought most of the retro stories do ask for suggestions, I thought it was cute, sorry!

KSUViolet06 05-05-2009 06:17 PM

I'm personally OVER retro thread in general.

They were fun when people who ACTUALLY posted here were doing them.

Now people come ghere JUST to post their retro threads and get attention.

I'm sorry, I still call shenanigans.

If you were a seasoned GCer, you wouldn't be stupid enough to post a new retro thread in the midst of this recent drama.

You're probably right... as I should have waited. I've been checking this site too much anyways, and it's been messing with my finals studying =]

for what it's worth, I'm not gonna "defend" my story anymore, it looks like eaglesbaby and how she kept defending hers! =]

May I suggest HPRL? They love to hear recruitment stories. You won't get flamed/outed like you are here.
