I experienced Isabel there back in '03. Although I was lucky and didn't lose power for more than a couple hours in the middle of the night. Friends weren't as lucky and had it out for days. A friend down in Annapolis discovered coconuts on the creek bank behind his house!

I hope it doesn't take much! I commute from Silver Spring to the BWI area and 95 wouldn't be fun in a hurricane. My contracting firm says if no code red, you have to take PTO if you're not coming in...which sucks since I'm new and don't have much PTO built up

Hypo's Halloween care package has turned into a hurricane care package. The last box I shipped on Saturday got there Monday so I'm hoping this one does too. I'm making pumpkin seeds for her. I have a bag of caramel apple suckers. I'm going to bake some cookies tonight too. I just can't decide between oatmeal and lemon bars.

Hypo isn't going to get her care package until probably Wednesday, at the earliest. Classes and mail service at Barnard and Columbia are cancelled for tomorrow. They received emails advising them to stock up on non-perishables and water. They are housing some food service staff in dorm lounges but limited meals will be served on a limited schedule by dorm floor because a lot of staff won't be able to get there.

Are y'all ready?

Even crazier, they were talking here that we can expect high waves on Lakes Erie and Huron which could cause some coastal flooding.

Munchkin03 10-28-2012 05:50 PM

THE EAST COAST FREAKS OUT!!!

They've shut down the entire NYC metropolitan public transit system, which I've NEVER seen happen...even during other storms parts of the system were operating in some form. The plan is to restore service 12 hours after the storm passes--which might mean as late as Wednesday. Crazy!

What can I do? I have water, flashlights, batteries in the radio, snacks, and lots of non-perishables. I grew up in Florida, so hurricanes are old hat, but I still get prepared for them. The hurricane isn't as scary as the possible tornadoes that spring up. My cousin lost everything last year in Tuscaloosa so I'm definitely more scared of tornadoes.

Hypo thought I was being ridiculous about suggested hurricane prep, until classes were canceled and they announced limited food service. She's taking it seriously now.

My school hasn't done crap to alert us of this weather or make things easier. They sent an email telling us classes will go on as usual tomorrow morning. FML. Its already been raining steadily all day, the ground is a soggy mess, and its not even the hurricane hitting us yet.

All of my collegiate sisters are griping because Susquehanna hasn't closed yet. They won't close. Everyone around us is closed. This has happened before.

Honestly, whatever their reasons for not closing (they never elaborate), seeing that just about every other school in about a two-hour radius is closed and (more than likely) knowing their students are grumbling, I really think it would behoove them to put out some sort of statement as to WHY they're not.

For those far away who want some idea of what the weather is like in the tri-state area...

Not much going on right now, but it'll pick up later.

I hate when you have to take your own time off! I just got the official email saying that NVCC is closed. My students will be thrilled as they were supposed to have a mid-term!

Stay safe!!

The wind knocked my power out this evening for about an hour. I'm all the way in Ohio. This must be SOME storm coming.

Folks are saying that the storm could cause lakefront waves/flooding/etc. for Cleveland peeps, but as for my area, nothing except tons of wind and annoying rain.

Luckily, eldest was taking it somewhat seriously as they dealt with Irene last year. Never, ever thought when we sent him to college in Philadelphia he'd have to deal with a hurricane, let alone two now!

I was a bit more worried this time, as he was in NYC for a Lambda Chi meeting over the weekend. His train left at 4pm and luckily it was pretty uneventful until he got back to Philly and the rain was pouring. Nothing like walking from the train station to the house in the pouring rain. The joys of college life, right?

I'm suddenly thankful the plans to move to NYC fell through...

lunalovegood 10-29-2012 11:53 AM

All classes here are cancelled until further notice. My physics professor e-mailed our section informing us that he'd keep lab open so we could get our books and do the lab if we weren't "afraid of a little rain... *sigh*" (I don't even think he has that power. The entire campus is shutting down at noon. This is unprecedented in our school's history.)

We've stocked up on nonperishables and gallons of water at the chapter house too!

lovespink88 10-29-2012 12:53 PM

My mom works for the local electric company and she mentioned that they already have sent 250 crews in preparation to help with power restoration.

My cousin literally just moved back from Baltimore. Like, she left this weekend and arrived back here last night. Crazy timing!

groovypq 10-29-2012 02:41 PM

Susquehanna's now closed. The apocalypse is upon us.
