The researcher/scientist can't let this go:

That is not what LadyLonghorn is saying at all. Again, your experience is specific to what chapters? what colleges/universities? Quote:

University of Alabama has family and friends at Bid Day!
Most Fraternity Pledges and Actives as well, many holding roses to introduce them selves with! What a sight! |
Very well then!

LL says this quoting the above from ugamama: Quote:
My personal experience is UT Austin (again, assuming LL's name and experience, hers should be similar). I pledged in the 90's and my sister in the 80's. In MY experience, it was very much the norm for families to attend bid day and I understand it still is. Legacy or not - and to be there to wipe tears off of those who don't fair well. I have also witnessed this at other TX and SEC schools where friends, daughters, etc... pledged. Didn't mean to set anyone off here. I was simply going off personal experience and questioning LL's seemingly similar experience. That's all. |
OK, then, very good: let's see the data. Specifically, universities/colleges, and evidence to support the claim(s) being put forth.

But these are the examples that I could verify through Facebook off the top of my head. PiPhi, Kappa, Chi O, TriDelt - all at UT, Kappa, PiPhi at A&M, PiPhi, TriDelt, ChiO at Ole Miss. I KNOW that I have pictures of Moms and Daughters at these schools on BID Day. I also KNOW that I was asked by various friends if I was going to Georgia to be with my daughter. One friend offered a beachhouse for me to stay in the week of Rush so I could be nearer to my daughter (just in case). These same women were going to be with their daughters at their campuses and were "concerned" and wanted me to be there. I am not repeating a myth. I didn't know it existed until I was asked/told about it last year. I will NOT post the facebook pictures because I don't feel it is right to do that. But I assure you I am not making this up. |
My friend's daughter "rushed" at Alabama last year and they had a brunch/lunch for the parents at each house once the bids were extended. At OSU and OU, many parents attend Bid Day, especially OSU, who has thier Bid Day on a Saturday. OU probably has less because thier Bid Day is during the workweek and many parents work.
My daughter goes to UT. There were not as many moms at Bid Day, however, I would not be surprised if that doesn't change in the years to come. Her sorority was very welcoming to us moms, but we didn't stay long..just long enough to see the house and give our daughters a hug and take some pictures....nothing like the "brunch" at Bama..There were moms there and I think there would be more if Bid Day was on the weekend...UT's is on a Tuesday. Personally, I wouldn't have missed it! |

Oh, and for what it's worth, my aunt and uncle, who are both alums of UGA, will be there at some point tonight (they live VERY close to the UGA campus) to celebrate with my cousin. |
FYI, http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...d.php?t=120630 is the thread where the topic of parents visiting on bid day was discussed a couple of weeks ago.

Keep the info coming, I've started a spreadsheet. Thanks, shellfish, for the link to the other thread. |

No harm, no foul. The spreadsheet is looking messy; I will keep working on it. This is fun for me! I'm learning all sorts of stuff today.
BTW here was my Zen of the Day meditation: "Conflict is never what it appears to be. Beneath the surface of emotional reactions lies a chance to transform the most bewildering questions into the most enlightened answers." |
Hmmm...according to that thread, parents DON'T go to bid day at UGA. That's from UGA sorority members.
