You "make an argument," "so-and-so argues that..." or even "engage in the argument that..." But, that's completely different than saying you are arguing with someone or having an argument. Different tone and context.

Oh, I get that. I'm just saying that in the context of my field, "argument" and "arguing" aren't necessarily that different from "discussion" and "discussing," except that an argument should be more formal and better thought through. I "have" arguments all the time, though I argue "against" someone, not "with" them.
