I'm not sure how you found this site -- don't give a shit LOL. But I would think administrator dude would know that, if it worked. Have a seat, home's.

I found this site many years ago because I'm a GLO alum. I noticed the spam thread and decided to mention that there are ways to mitigate the problem, in case the "administrator dude" wasn't aware. And since this has been an on-going issue, I thought I would share my experience.

Seriously though, who talks like this? Homes?

Actually, there are things you can set up in the vbulletin settings that are much more effective at stopping spam. I run a forum using PHPBB and used the techniques which totally stopped spam. Vbulletin has a way to set up questions during register (like what is 1 +1) that any human should be able to complete. It's totally stopped spam accounts from being created on my board.

Actually, my sorority does this on our website. Whenever you register for something, pay dues, etc. it has a simple addition problem to solve and there's a message like: to prove you are a human, please answer this question.

Folks post how they talk, home's.

If you seen this site years ago, why didn't you join then?

Please leave 1963 Owtlaw alone. We need him here for entertainment value

1963 Owtlaw 03-26-2015 05:32 PM

For real, tho. Dude started that fundraiser. Dude also said he would start giving mofos avatars in exchange for some loot. I remember dude sayin some shit like "Due to the high demands of payroll I need y'all to sow a seed of whatever y'all can..." Or some shit like that. Then he said he was hittin mofos up either through PayPal or a credit card. That's why I assumed moderators got a paycheck. I'll bet dude will eventually start charging muthafuggas because he said the shit is high as hell to keep active. Dude probably got overdraft fees coming out his ass LOL!

FSUZeta 03-26-2015 07:46 PM

Moderators and super moderators DO NOT get paid to serve as such on GC.

So all this time, dude wasn't payin y'all? That's scandalous as hell. Forget I said I wanted to be a moderator then LOL. I thought y'all had set times that y'all would log on to moderate and every two weeks dude would direct deposit y'all some loot for y'alls services of at least 6 hunnid in the bank.

The way some people act over being a moderator you'd think they got paid!

ASTalumna06 03-29-2015 04:14 PM

Ahhhhhh make it stop!

thetalady 03-29-2015 11:11 PM

THANK YOU to whichever mod got rid of the spammer who bumped a gillion threads today!!

Nanners52674 04-06-2015 03:07 PM

Would it be possible to block the introduction section on the main list of updated threads that shows on the homepage?

33girl 04-06-2015 03:33 PM

That's what I've proposed several times (here and in MC).

carnation 04-06-2015 04:12 PM

That's good but some of those guys start spamming all the forums once they become regular members, like that michellewhoever from last week or all those medical spammers in 2012. I'd like to know what that guy hathor was talking about--how there are some more tools available now for owners of these boards to block spammers.

The owner of the board can just google "vbulletin spambots fix" and get instructions on how to add things to the mix that make it hard for spambots to get around. I personally have a forum running on PHPBB, which has the same issues with spammers. I just added a line in the registration about something specific to my forum that everyone knows, but spammers usually don't. It could be something as easy as "what does 1 plus 1 equal". Or a Greek themed question that everyone knows.

I'm a computer girl, but most non computer programmer types can add these measures fairly easily, by following instruction guides that the VBulletin gurus have created for non techies.

We went from having to moderate every new user account and getting 15 spam accounts a day to having NONE. It's really a great way to fix the problem.

Again, not selling anything. I have no motive for suggesting this, other than past experience. And not wanting to sort thorough tons of spam every morning.

SydneyK 04-12-2015 10:16 AM

So. Much. Spam. UGH.
Did something change recently? It just seems like we've seen more than usual lately.

John, are you familiar with what hathorlive talked about? Can Nanner's and 33girl's suggestion be implemented?

TPA85 04-12-2015 12:53 PM

Make it stop!!!

tinydancer 04-12-2015 06:28 PM

I am reporting all the spam I see and will continue until this problem is fixed. It just makes GC less enjoyable when we have to wade through all the crap.

thetalady 04-12-2015 10:43 PM

UGH... 23 spam threads on the home page now :-(

ASTalumna06 04-15-2015 10:15 AM

Ahhhhhh honestly.. this is really annoying now. In the last few days, I've come to GC on more than one occasion and immediately left because of all the spam.

honeychile 04-15-2015 10:56 AM

I am pointing my virtual Uzi at the spammers at this point!

Ditto. I really want the ability to block/ignore the Introductions threads.

AGDee 04-15-2015 07:12 PM

I don't look at the introductions threads at all. Why do you go there? I have it bookmarked to go to a list of all the forums. This link here: http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/

I don't see any spam.

Thanks for the tip! I always go to the homepage, so I see the threads with the newest posts, including all of the new spammers who each have started a separate thread in Introductions..

tinydancer 04-20-2015 02:21 PM

Can we at least get rid of all the symbol crap messages?

(Answering my own question - obviously we can't)

andthen 05-26-2015 08:28 AM

Thanks to the current spamer who has posted to multiple discussion threads, you've blocked your idiotic content from my work computer. I wish these people would find a more productive hobby.

IndianaSigKap 06-19-2015 10:56 AM

Cue the spam bots... 3.....2.....1....

carnation 06-19-2015 12:30 PM

OK guys, let's push down the spam by posting!

ColdInCanada11 06-19-2015 01:41 PM

Whomp whomp whomp, spam-tastic!

ChioLu 06-19-2015 02:43 PM

Wow - stopped counting at 60 spam threads today ...

Munchkin03 06-19-2015 02:43 PM

It's really bad right now. John, help!

xibair 06-19-2015 02:51 PM

Yikes!!! This is really bad. I guess the spam jam irritators have nothing else to do today.

violetgeek 06-19-2015 07:37 PM

has it ever gone on this long?

carnation 06-19-2015 07:59 PM

No! So thank you, James!

clemsongirl 06-19-2015 08:35 PM

Not again!!

Ag_Sis 06-19-2015 08:37 PM

Well at least I can practice my French...

AOIIalum 06-19-2015 08:47 PM

It's never ending tonight. Yikes!

tinydancer 06-19-2015 11:09 PM

I'm sure it is pointless for me to say that other boards I frequent have NO SPAM EVER so it is possible. I'll just say it anyway.
