LMDAO, this made me think of the Andy Kaufman funeral scene in Man on the Moon.

And why is it that the men who are the fattest wear them the most? You have extra fat to keep your neck warm, do you really need the turtle?

Re Abercrombie, BB etc, get a copy of the Official Preppy Handbook and it pretty much explains what's what. The Abercrombie name was bought by The Limited sometime in the 90s which resulted in its present incarnation.

Yes, and still the best cars I have ever owned. Much better than this Land Rover piece of shit I now have or my BMW that blew an engine 6 weeks out of warranty.

The late 80s, actually.

And I don't have my old copy handy, but doesn't The Official Preppy Handbook list Abercrombie & Fitch in its "RIP" section (late, great stores)?

ETA: If I remember right, A&F closed in the 70s, then later reopened as a high-end sporting goods store before being bought by The Limited.

I saw Vineyard Vines mens dress shirts at Marshall's yesterday. All I could think was "So not fratty anymore!". :D

Elephant Walk 04-03-2008 04:59 PM

I hate to say I've never heard of Marshalls.

This whole thing can go on forever. People should wear what they feel most comfortable in. I will always think that cargo shorts/hooded sweatshirts look like trash but to each his own. I am sure some people look down on what I wear. Fraternities in the South ( and maybe some rich Northeast schools) will always be different than the rest of the country.

Like TJ Maxx or Steinmart - they sell last season's mid-range fashions at discounted prices.

Gotcha. We have a TJ Maxx here, I think.

I'm suprised that VV was sold there...really suprised. They're usually only sold in boutique-type stores (I can only think of two in Arkansas), not like RL at Dillards or anything. Are you sure it wasn't Old Navy? I think Old Navy has a whale sometimes that they put on their clothes that looks a helluvalot like VV's. Who knows. I'm not a terribly big fan of VV for some of the stuff they put out, but the polos are very good quality.

No offense taken - what I mean is that often clothing discussions degenerate into north/south debates that quickly take an ugly turn. So, while I too am interested in what different campuses wear, I am afraid that certain GCers will be unable to resist the chance to start another "fratty/non-fratty" discussion. And yes, I think it's silly and unnecessary, so I hope I am wrong.

Yup, you called it. GC=predictable?

It was a dress shirt that the label and package clearly said Vineyard Vines. Martha's Vineyard was written underneath. I first misread it and thought Martha Stewart was designing mens shirts.

But as far as I can tell, it wasn't the Southerners who made the turn.

I've seen all sizes of VV in at least 2 different Marshall's in the DC area as well as the Sak's 5th Avenue and Nordstrom's Rack at the outlets in Potomac Mills. Filene's Basement in Newton, MA also has a good bit of the men's line.

She never said who would cause the shift, she only said that it would happen.
