Don't cut to the chase too quickly! I think it would be interesting to hear what your thoughts were a second time around!

Soliloquy 07-02-2007 01:14 PM

Leslie, your story has been wonderful! I am anxiously waiting to hear what it was like for you to go through again.

On a side note: sometimes a dysfunctional family is the best kind of family. In some instances, you really learn how to appreciate each other through the mess-ups you make together or the struggles you survive through. :)

Yes- don't leave out any details of your second recruitment experience!

Chi O at IU had a ton of Jewish sisters when I was there. In fact, I think Chi O and AXiD had the most Jewish sisters after AEPhi and SDT!

My cousin is also a Jewish Chi O. :D

I don't think that's true - she may have misinterpreted something. Unless something has really changed since my undergrad years.

We had an SDT chapter on my campus, and although the majority of members were Jewish it certainly wasn't a requirement. (efcheerBB was a member of SDT at my campus, albeit several years after me :o...she should be able to confim that)

When I joined SDT, out of my pledge class of 8, we were split 50/50. The following pledge class were all non-jews. I think things may have changed since then, but I am not aware of it. I do know we did a reorganization over the past couple of years so who knows... :(

As for the whole legacy thing, part of me wonders what it will be like for my sister if she goes to a school with SDT and decides to rush since we are not jewish...

Yes and yes.

Some sororities could only take Christians, some Catholics, some Mormons. Let's face it, ADPi and Phi Mu were both founded at a Methodist College - I would imagine that their first 50 some years, they only took Methodists - although I don't know this as a fact. Now, every NPC sorority has a non-discrimination policy.

WOW I never saw that turn coming. I am so sorry that it didn't work out the first time around, but obviously there was a happy ending in there somewhere. I am loving reading this and can't wait to read more!

I think it's funny both of you mentioned Chi Os...when I made the comment about sororities founded on Christian ideals--that was the sorority I had in mind; since my sister is a Chi O (and we're Jewish; duh). I know her college didn't have many Jews (although there was a "Jewish" sorority). She was happy that she was able to make up her own mind. Me too. It would've been really weird to be so limited in my choices. My Mom said that there were a lot of girls she knew (her roommate included) who were Jewish who went bidless on Bid Day if they didn't really click with the girls (and vice versa of course, due to mutual selection).

I don't remember religion ever being an issue. We had a rush "workday" on Rosh Hashanah and I remember some girls being excused so that they could go to temple (workdays were non-rush days where we would prepare for the next round) and I remember being excused from a sisterhood on all saints day so that I could go to mass. I was never a big deal and I personally think there would have been a riot if someone had brought it up as a reason during membership selection.

The Second Time Around

Over the year, my perception of some of the sororities had changed a bit; Croquet wasn’t as intimidating as I had thought, Football was really a great group of girls, and not all the Sunbathers were blonde and bubbly. I wasn’t very interested though. I had only one purpose in mind; to re-pledge Water Skiing.

I had made some very close friends with the girls on my hall during my freshman year. None of them were in sororities. They all saw how much I loved being in a sorority so by sophomore year many of them wanted to Rush. There was:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ry-maureen.jpg“Mother Hen Maureen” who was everyone’s best friend and my roommate. I thought she’d fit in well in Football or even Soccer.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...story-jill.jpg“Giggling Jill” who I thought was a shoe-in for Ice Skating.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...y-jeannine.jpg“Gentle Jeannine” could fit in at any number of sororities.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ory-vilola.jpg“Vampy Viola” was puzzling. I had no idea where to place her.

There was also a close friend of mine who didn’t live on the hall,
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...story-gail.jpg“Goofy Gail.” I was hoping that she would pledge Water Skiing, but I could see her in other sororities as well.

My pledge sisters from Water Skiing, “Irene”http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...tory-irene.jpg and “Becky” http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ory-becky2.jpghadn’t made grades the second semester either. I begged them to go through Rush again but “Irene” wasn’t up for it and “Becky” was a junior, had started her own business and just wasn’t in a ‘pledging a sorority’ place. She adored Water Skiing and encouraged me to try to re-pledge. She said, “Become a Water Skiing sister for me.” I was so sad that she would never be my sister.

My other pledge sister, http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ry-tabitha.jpg“Tabitha”, couldn’t understand why I’d want to re-pledge Water Skiing. She was “setting her sights higher.” (her words, not mine)

My best friend from home, http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...story-iris.jpgIris, was also going through Rush this year at UCLA.

So, once again, Rush began. I didn’t keep notes this time and I barely remember it. I knew the game by then and just flew on auto-pilot.

susan314 07-02-2007 05:56 PM

I'd imagine it was awkward having to go back through at Soccer, after the dirty looks and comments they had thrown your way for months after the previous rush. :(

kathykd2005 07-02-2007 06:12 PM

Goodness! I can't imagine going through recruitment twice, on the potential member side. It was difficult enough the first time!!!

violetpretty 07-02-2007 07:53 PM

I wonder what it was like at water skiing, since you didn't clue them in so much as to your situation. Did they think you left them randomly or were they expecting you to repledge?

FuzzieAlum 07-02-2007 07:57 PM

Even without knowing about her family situation, they would have known her grades (I think). So Water Skiing would have known she was unable to initiate and not thought she left them randomly.

The suspense is killing me.
