I can't believe I never saw this thread before either (at least I don't remember it). How neat that your daughter is also our sister :) I hope I will be able to call my future daughter my sister also someday (providing I have a daughter...). Congrats and ZLAM to you and your daughter!

Your legacy story is so sweet! My daughter is a junior in high school and I am really hoping she joins my sorority. I lost out on a legacy with my sister when she went through rush back in the late 80's...she's your sister in ZTA instead! Two years later our cousin went through rush at the same school...she preferenced my sorority and ZTA...and she became a Zeta too! So, I'm really hoping I finally get lucky with my daughter....

question for anyone who can answer ...
my chapter does not do bigs and little, we stick solely to sister-moms and sister-daughters (we're such a small chapter thats why). i've noticed throughout reading many different threads that PNM's and their families say things like "she can already see this girl being her big," which sounds like the PNM-turned-NM gets to Chose her big. also, when FSUZeta talked about her daughter getting twins, that caught my eye too.

just curious how it works that the NM gets to pick her Big? i would think it would be more special for the NM to be surprised by who her Big is lol

The sister-mother/sister-daughter terminology is unique to Alpha Gamma Delta and doesn't have anything to do with your chapter size :) It is the same concept, just different terminology. I had twins myself one term, because we were a tiny chapter and took more new members than we had members. Each sorority does the matching of bigs/littles in different ways.

squirrel love, the big sister chairman works with the new member trainer and depending on the chapter size it may just be the two of them working on the matches, or there may be a committee. usually initiated members who want to take a little sister will sign up to do so, and during the first few weeks of the new member period, the new member will get a temporary big sister on a weekly basis, so that she gets to know several potential big sisters to make a better decision when the time comes. the temp. big goes to lunch with the potential little sister, or gets ice cream or coffee, or sits together at the football game=a low key activity that does not cost a lot of money. at some point in the semester, the new members will all list the girls that they would like to have as a big sister and the committee doing the matching does their best to give each girl their first choice. in my daughter's chapter, they try to match girls who don't have little sisters yet and want one, which is why some girls end up with twins. that is also how it worked with my chapter back in the day.

so in essence, the new member does get to choose her big, up to a point and it works sort of like the recruitment process works.

i know all Alpha Gam chapters do sis-mom and sis-dot, i've had twin sist-dots before. i know other Alpha Gam chapters that not only have sis-mom/dot but Also do bigs/littles and i assumed it was because they are such huge chapters that it helps the sisters get to know each other better. i was only curious if some chapters have the NM's pick who their big will be and such, based on what i read in this thread lol
