I have a problem with people thinking the following:

That was so funny to me and i am a Nupe.

It is all in good humar.

But some people cross the line and put personal stuff in they shows they hurts individuals reputations, feelings, and are just cheap shots.

That is the difference between and acceptable show and a show that is just WRONG!!!

So mocking a rape is "the way it is supposed to be done", "funny", "in good HUMOR", and "acceptable". However, only hurting people's reputations and feelings are unnaceptable?

Are you for real dude?

Faking rape? What in the world?
I really don't see how this could be funny.

Sad..

I believe I've already voiced my opinion about this topic somewhere around page 2 but I wanted to add a related comment. I was thinking back of about a comment made by a member of an Auxilary organization concerning the state of the greek community. Although there were huge gaps in her argument which I will not even entertain but one point did stick out- the lack of unity. Sometimes I think members forget that we are all "suppose" to be united under the umbrella of the NPHC. No one has to explain the importance of organizational pride because my love for Delta Sigma Theta and all that she represents is held close to my heart but what about having basic respect for your fellow brothers and sisters? I know times change but the basic premise of our organizations have not. I know I am not the same Delta I was back in 1995 because I've learned so much and have grown in the process and I hope these young Greeks don't poison new members with this nonsense because neos are a direct reflection of their prophytes. I do believe poking fun can be done in an innocent way but some of these posts referencing recent probate/stepshows is evident that some of us having indeed taken it too far.

Last night I just happened to catch the last 15-20 minutes of the K A Psi Spring 2K6 probate at my alma mater. Throughout the entire time I was there they were incredibly disrespectful. They used tons of profanity and even went as far as calling out the name of a pledge that apparently dropped line and didn't make it through. I also noticed that hardly any members from the other greek organizations were there I later learned that they had left earlier because they were disrespected at the probate and refused to stay for the rest of the show. It's only been 6 years since I graduated and it seems like step shows, probates, etc have become more vulgar and repulsive. I remember when I was an undergrad neos would greet each organization in attendance and show respect for their fellow greeks. I will end this in saying that perhaps this is not just a problem with greeks but with society as a whole. It has become more acceptable to put people down and publicly "diss" them. Showing love and respect have become almost a sign of weakness. Just look at the hip hop industry where you cannot sell any records unless you have a diss song or beef with another artist. It used to be that greeks represented the campus's elite and brightests individuals. This may still be true but you would never be able to tell it by some of their behaviors.

Ok, I thought he meant rapping too, that is why I was not alarmed. I hope he meant rapping, and not raping.

So true, neos spout what prophytes teach. But not only that, they follow the patterns that they see before they even pledge. We should be representing the best and the brightest, all that is right with African American youth, but in a lot of ways we sound like a bunch of thugs. How are we going to attract responsible and scholarly frats and sorors acting this way?

When I pledged, I chose AKA because of what I saw on campus at the time. In fairness, I was leaning that way because my best friend had pledged, but then I saw the Delta's and Zeta's and thought, let me see what they are about (we did not have Sigma Gamma Rho at the time). I ultimately chose AKA because I noticed that they were visible in every aspect of campus life. They were in Student Government, on the yearbook, the newspaper, some were cheerleaders, etc. They also had the highest GPA. I think I pledged for the right reason, and I chose my sorority for the right reason. Now if I were a thug, I would be looking for a thug sorority to live out my foolish fantasies. We have to be careful of the impression we are leaving with people. We are going to attract people that act like and/or admire us.

I have heard that the AKA's didnt drink in their letters but taking into account i'm a year into greek life and my scope of wisdom at this time is limited to the research i've done and the interaction with the representatives of those orgs in my community, i've seen AKA's drink in letters, i've seen female probate shows diss not only the other D9 sororities but diss the Frats as well. I've been to probably 20 stepshows to date and have yet to see one that didnt diss another organization.

I think something like this, where we are comparing the 80's or early 90's to now is like comparing the Cosby show to Boondocks... yes there was a time when things were done the right way... but now things have turned a new page and it has a new ring of controversy to it. Would it be nice to go back to the days you veteran greeks speak of... sure... but please dont discredit what i'm saying because it is not what you did in your time. Step back and look at today's climate in greek life.

Its gone from only being able to pledge one organization to people dropping from one line to get on another orgs line simply because they were promised an easier path to greekdom... its ridiculous...

This alludes to the 'entitlement' mentality I spoke of in the kross kolors thread.

NEO, times have changed....for the worse, IMHO.

How is this the right way? It sounds utterly disrespectful to me. A fake rape? Lawd hamercy!

my .22 cents (and, my word, i will attempt to stay on tangent):

i think that dissing should be OUT of a step show; it's a competion and to me, the stepping should do all the talking. nuff said.

i do think, however, that coming out shows are a time to grand stand. i mean, that's your time to wild out, or a least that's how it was when i was in school... at the very same time, there is NEVER a time to do anything that is in poor taste or that would reflect negatively upon one's organization. a mock rape is always in poor taste and highly inappropriate. skits mocking sexuality is always in poor taste and highly inappropriate (ALL NINE OF US HAVE HOMOSEXUAL MEMBERS; don't fake the funk.) men disrespecting women is NEVER appropriate. i have been to some shows and the chants that have been said about women made me feel embarrassed as woman just by listening to them and i have wondered WHERE is the advising chapter. i don't think the founders would approve of this kind of thing. a little teasing or getting a little jab in here and there is one thing, but making your WHOLE show an attempt to down another org is just pathetic and NOT creative.

i am an SGRho and lawd knows i don't think anybody is the butt of chants and coming out punches more than SGRho...but if its just a little teasing, i can dismiss it (because i know the things we can say, too) and if its a good joke, i may even laugh. but these things that are just overtly crude and meant to be straight up malicious, intended to rip and tear on another organization makes me wonder where our NPHC values are at.
