Fence Stolen From Local Walgreens Store
Surveillance Cameras May Have Been Inactive During Crime POSTED: 5:32 pm EDT July 6, 2005 UPDATED: 5:53 pm EDT July 6, 2005 DETROIT, Mich. -- A fence surrounding a Walgreens store on Detroit's east side has been stolen. Employees at the store on Jefferson Avenue at Mt. Elliott arrived one day to find that a section of the aluminum fencing was missing. The next day, the entire fence had been popped out of the brackets, Local 4 reported. "We already don't have a Kmart. We don't have a Meijer. We don't have a Wal-Mart. We don't have a Target in the city, and we're up here destroying the new Walgreens," said Regina Gibson, a customer at the store. The store has surveillance cameras but it was not known if the incident was captured on tape. The man also died and an officer was wounded. The man killed Sunday night after an hours-long standoff was identified as Jose Raul Lemos, and the girl, about 17 months old, was his daughter, police said. The officer, who was not immediately identified, was shot in the shoulder and was expected to recover. "He was using the baby as a shield," Assistant Police Chief Jim McDonnell said. Mother, son arrested in drive-by shooting A mother and son have been arrested on aggravated assault charges after they were involved in a drive-by shooting, police said today. Around 2 a.m. Sunday, the mother drove the car :eek: and encouraged her 16-year-old son to fire at a house in the 1900 block of West Regal, Capt. Randy Landon said. Even though prostitutes were forced to leave the area after the Berlin Wall, fell because dead-end streets in the downtrodden district were re-connected to east Berlin and property values surged, Renate Dolle was allowed to stay, Bild said. "I've got a lot of regular clients," the blonde woman told the newspaper, pictured wearing a short red mini skirt and high-heeled white boots as she stood near the Japanese embassy. She said she charges 30 euros ($36) and on good nights she has four to five clients. "I'm going to stop at 64 and retire," said Dolle, whose husband drops her off for work each night after the television evening news and who has a nine-year-old granddaughter. She is one of 10,000 prostitutes in Berlin and 400,000 in Germany, where prostitution is legal. Dolle said she tried to work in a popular red light district nearby recently but was chased away by younger competitors.
