(Aug. 6, 2003) *All eyes are on the tiny hamlet of Eagle Colorado today because that's where Kobe Bryant will be. He'll be there to make a brief appearance in an Eagle County courtroom where he will be advised of the sexual assault charge against him, his rights and possible penalties. He is free on $25,000 bond.
Bryant, 24, is accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old Eagle woman on June 30 at The Lodge and Spa at Cordillera. Bryant denies the charges, saying it was consensual sex. Bryant is charged with a Class 3 felony, and if convicted faces 20 years to life probation or four years to life in prison. In other developments, as far as his endorsements are concerned, The LA Laker guard has already lost one. Bryant who speaks Italian, had been signed to a contract by the makers of Nutella, an Italian chocolate-hazelnut spread. Well, the company is dumping him; they say that "considering the recent developments" it will phase out its links to Bryant. He still has ties to Nike, McDonald's, Sprite, Upper Deck, Nintendo and Spalding ... for now.

In a legal development, the Associated Press is reporting that Bryant's lawyers asked a judge Tuesday to punish any law enforcement officers who discussed the sexual assault case with reporters in violation of a court order.

The lawyers want Eagle County Judge Frederick Gannett to schedule a hearing so officers can be questioned under oath about whether they leaked information. The request came after news reports in the past week quoted anonymous sources who described reported injuries to the accuser and the amount of time she spent in Bryant's room. The sources also said Bryant gave inconsistent statements to law enforcement officials.

Finally, NBA commissioner David Stern criticized Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban on Tuesday after Cuban said the league can't help but benefit financially from the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case.

"Any suggestion that there will be some economic or promotional benefit to the NBA arising from the charge pending against Kobe Bryant is both misinformed and unseemly," Stern said in a statement issued by the league office.

"That idea does not reflect the views of the NBA, NBA owners generally, or others associated with our sport," Stern said.

Cuban, the most outspoken of the league's 29 owners, has said the NBA is bound to get an economic boost when Bryant returns to the court for the Los Angeles Lakers because it will draw the interest of casual fans and non-fans.

Cuban appeared on the television show 'Access Hollywood' on Monday night and said of the case: "From a business perspective, it's great for the NBA. It's reality television, people love train wreck television and you hate to admit it, but that is the truth, that's the reality today."

Well the court appearance is over. Nothing happened. The next court date is October 9th at 1PM (see AKA thread about Kobe). The media coverage on this is sickening. When Kobe was leaving in an SUV, Keith Olbermann on MSNBC said, "Kobe's leaving in an SUV. That should bring back some memories."

So, my question is, do you think it's right to compare OJ and Kobe since they are both African American athelets? IMO, no since the charges were so different.

That's a straight mess, because I didn't even read the Boondocks today! :o Yes, I do believe that Kobe Bean needs a dream team, and fast!! In fact, someone on TV said today that they think that Kobe will be found guilty in order to even out the effects of what happened with the OJ trial, the acquittal.

JC may come in to this case, but Kobester, if he's acquitted, better be ready to say goodbye to the endorsement deals, etc.
:p

Honestly, I think that JC would hurt the situation more than help He is too much of a celebrity himself and would raise the profile on an already high profile matter. Also, I would say you need to look at the population of Eagle, Co and see how are they likely to view JC - negatively or positively. Usually jurors do not have a reason to have an opinion about the lawyers but JC is an exception. If they were put off by his representation of OJ or others, he may not be a good move.

Shoot, he already had to say goodbye to a couple of endorsements a few days ago. Nutella (sp?) and Sprite have already given the Kobester the boot.

Feh on Nutella. But I'm surprised that Sprite dumped him. Now, I wonder about Nike and the contract.

Feh on Nutella! Blasphemy!

Crepes with Nutella are the anti-nutricious but CERTAINLY delicious. It's a bigger deal in Europe.
