Cause I didn't know as much as I wish I did about Alpha Sigma Tau....

Alpha Sigma Tau

AST's National Philanthropy
Alpha Sigma Tau chapters have traditionally supported the education and training of emotionally disturbed children. Alpha Sigma Tau National Sorority supports Pine Mountain Settlement School as our national philanthropy. Our first National Social Service Chairmen, Lucile Steen, researched Pine Mountain Settlement School and recommended that Alpha Sigma Tau adopt the school as a permanent national service project. It was a natural fit for our sorority, because at the time AST was still a member of the Association of Educational Sororities.

At the March 2, 1945 National Council board meeting it was decided that money from our National Social Service Annual Fund be donated to Pine Mountain and a domestic project be organized to assist the school.

So began our history with this unique and wonderful educational institution that has changed and shaped the lives on many children.

why some chapters are "Alpha Sigma Tau FRATERNITY" and some are "Alpha Sigma Tau SORORITY":

Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority is the correct name of the organization. Why isn't Alpha Sigma Tau called a fraternity officially as many other female Greek organizations are? At the time of the founding of most of the older women's fraternities, the Greek derivative phratres of phratria, meaning tribes or groups of people with similar interests and backgrounds, was the basis for the title, fraternity. No doubt, because the women's organizations were modeled in many ways after the older men's groups, the women simply used the title fraternity, too. It was at the June 8, 1935 meeting of the National Council that the identification of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority and not Fraternity. The collegiate chapters through Upsilon have Alpha Sigma Tau Fraternity on their charters; all chapters from that point forward have Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority on their charter.

The Creed of Alpha Sigma Tau

As a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, I believe in the permanence and loveliness of its ideals. I believe in the values of friendship and fidelity to purpose. I believe in the fulfillment of self and will strive to contribute my share to the progress of mankind. I believe in cultivating beauty of spirit and graciousness of living in all my contacts with others. I believe that faithfulness to these ideals will help me to live joyously and valiantly.

Congratulations to you and to AST! I wish I had been able to get to know more about the organization while their chapter was at my campus, but from what I did learn, it's a wonderful sisterhood. Congratulations again! :)

I'm so happy you found a home with us!! I met several of the Radford girls last year and they are super! You are in for a great time...we've got lots of stuff happening in the next few years!

Now that you're home, I'm guessing Aries was AST because you said they had a hard time talking about their philanthropy. Our national philanthropy has changed somewhat from what it was and it's no longer quite as hands on as it used to be, so it's hard for even me to explain sometimes. I had to sit on my hands to keep from typing that during your thread (and risk giving something away!!)

Come on over to the AST forum and introduce yourself!!! We're few, but we're proud!!! Bring your new sisters!!!!

In Sisterhood,
PsychTau

Actually, AST was Sagittarius :).
Bid day is over and I had an AWESOME TIME. My pledge class is 13 lovely girls, and I'm so excited about pledging. The girls are all so different but so sweet and fun!
If I ever though twice about what organization to join, I never will again, I love it!

Thank you all SO much for your support during my rush experience!!! I'll head over to the AST forum soon!
