I didn't have stats for AEPhi
This year less drops in between registering for recruitment and Open House round
Also more girls were placed this year

Thanks for taking the time to post these!

The BZ chapter of Kappa posted a cute pic on twitter of their bid day shirts and banner. The shirts said "blue & blue look good on you".

Question about totals/ open bidding

My DD went to one sorority at Iowa for preference round, but was so broken up about not getting invited back to her legacy sorority that she dropped out at that point. Now she is realizing her mistake and is totally heartbroken. She wishes she would have stayed with it, as all her friends have pledged and many of them pledged the sorority she let go of. I am assuming there is nothing to be done at this point except for her to just go on with her life. But, I though I'd check and make sure that's that. Any info, or advice would be much appreciated. It's so hard to know your daughter is hurting.

So sorry to hear about your daughter! Just to clarify, she attended the pref round party but didn't go to bid day? Or did she get her bid but not run and join the house?

pickysister 09-17-2013 08:51 PM

She attended the pref round party but officially dropped out right afterwards. i know in the past there has been Spring bidding, but that doesn't seem to be the case this year (?). I just want to advise her correctly to just forget the whole thing or to hope for being recruited later in the year or perhaps next fall.

scrapcat 09-17-2013 10:56 PM

That's too bad! She should've given the house a chance! I'm not an expert on all things bidding, So I'm not sure what to tell you. I do know that Spring recruitment (if it happens) only happens if a house is below total. And I think Jill1128 posted that all houses (unbelievably) are at or above total (that's the bid day number) some will drop out of the "pledge period" possibly leaving room. My friends dd was dropped right before pref rounds, heartbreaking....

This is no longer a campus where you can hedge your bets. She basically has a few choices - look into AEPhi which didn't participate in formal rush, or the Lutheran sorority that also didn't participate, look into one of the multicultural or service sororities (NOT a swap for NPC), or wait until next year. She had a gift and she wasted it.

Now, there IS a possibility that 1 sorority could be doing a little COB later in the year. They're currently above total but if they lose any members due to one reason or another, they could be looking to pick up a few girls next semester. She should advise the Greek life office of her interest in any informal opportunities and in the meantime keep her grades up, make friends, get involved on campus, and prepare for rush next year.

I think she understands she "had a gift, she wasted it", thanks. I'll let her know she needs to use this experience as a motivator and make something positive come of it, as it sounds as if things are what they are for, at least, the near future.
Thanks very much for your answers and advice.

Talked to my friend who's dd was released from recruitment just before pref rounds. There were a lot of distraught girls on those last two days. Counseling was made available. She said there were a few conselors helping out and they were busy with a lot of girls. My friends daughter wasn't very upset she was a last minute sign up after all.

I'm wondering how many have dropped since the glitter and glam of bid day has passed.
I also heard that phc is thinking of upping chapter total .... Can anyone verify?

DubaiSis 09-19-2013 11:09 PM

If they're following RFM, they're supposed to adjust total after formal rush every year. It would make sense that they would increase total to 134, the current chapter average. Or they could make it 130 if they wanted to compromise between current total and chapter average. If they upped total to 130, it would only affect 2 chapters. If they change it to 134 it will affect 4 chapters. The chapters are all REALLY balanced now.

Jill1228 09-19-2013 11:19 PM

I'm sure the raising total will come up again. It did last year. Was hotly debated

DubaiSis 09-20-2013 12:34 AM

I've tried 3 times now to type out my nuggets of genius and the site keeps crashing just as I hit enter. grrrrrr. Here I go again...
I think it's time to look at expansion. Hopefully a sorority with a good building plan, complete with parking and all the safety concerns, can get a waiver from city council to build a house to sleep 50 or so. Or maybe they can take over one of the close in fraternity houses. With their history of the revolving door of fraternities getting kicked off for bad behavior, I don't think that's outside the realm of possibility.

But one thing is certain, Iowa's Greek system is hot and growing!
