You can't see them in that pic (well, they are in the bottom of that pic but you can't see them well enough to read them), but the alumnae chapter shields have the chapter name (ex: Cleveland Alumnae Chapter) and the year. They are also a different shape. |
Kappa Delta Crest
Does anyone have images of Kappa Delta's two previous crests?
The original was quite different from our current crest, but the second version is closer. I want to say the original was in existence until at least 1904? I bought engraved images of both for my chapter suite when I was a collegiate, but cannot find a picture of either anywhere! |
Wow. I learned something about my own CoA from this thread! (That Emily Helen Butterfield helped design our CoA).
Phi Beta's Coat of Arms: http://www.phibeta.com/graphics/coatofarms_smallres.gif (Higher res of Phi Beta CoA) Note the difference between the gold & green laurel leaves. You will see our CoA with both. Until recently it was this design: http://www.serve.com/Gladys/graphics/crest.jpg And our original CoA (from a bad scan from an old magazine) which is quite different. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ps/th_coa1.jpg (Link to high res) The things I can tell you about the CoA are that our official flower is the American Beauty rose, which is pictured, and that the banner at the bottom is our motto in Greek "To Be Rather Than To Seem To Be". Another official symbol that is fairly recent to us is our Allied Arts Design. http://www.phibeta.com/graphics/allied_arts.jpg It's pretty obvious that it combines symbols of the arts we represent (nothing secret about this one!) music, art, dance, visual arts, etc. I've been told there's supposed to be a pen for writing under the dancer's feet, but I've never actually seen that. It's a popular jewelry piece for our members. (More bad photos!) http://www.phibeta.com/graphics/jewe...d_arts_pin.jpg |

I don't think this has been posted already. I was looking for something else on google books and came across this picture. It is from the Alpha Chi Omega history book.
http://books.google.com/books?id=cSo...%2C1031&edge=0 sorry it is sideways, I wasn't sure how to move it when I pasted it from the book. |
Wow that must be very old since it has ADPhi, not ADPi

SAI!
Haven't seen SAI yet, so please let me do the honors.
The Coat-of-Arms http://www.sai-national.org/home/Por...crestsmall.jpg The Official Title http://www.sai-national.org/home/Por.../logosmall.jpg Philanthropies Logo http://www.sai-national.org/home/Por.../philsmall.jpg We also have a seal, but at the moment I can't find a digital picture of it. |
Phi Sig!
And, I'm double posting, but here's Phi Sig's:
Official Logo: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...orite/logo.jpg The Fraternity Seal: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...orite/seal.gif The first Fraternity Coat-of-Arms. It was used until 1930. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...vorite/pps.gif The Coat-of-Arms. In use since 1940, a more crude version of this CoA was designed in 1930 to present a more professional look. The refined version is the one we use today. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...rite/crest.gif |
AGD
And, I'm triple posting! But, here's AGD.

I really enjoy seeing some of the similarities in various CoA, not because I think I "know" what something might mean to a particular organization, but because there can be many different reasons why any particular group would use a symbol.
Those reasons - those stories - are what makes the symbols and rituals so special. You can pick apart any CoA and figure out the dictionary meanings behind everything, but you don't know the "why". Even if someone was to read your ritual, there is no context. That is something that no one can take away from us. That's where the "magic" and the intrigue happens. You can't explain it; it has to be experienced. |
Love those flags! I know ZTA, Chi Omega, and Tri Delta still use those flags - does anyone know if those are still current for the other organizations?

ETA: I'm pretty sure I've seen (or seen pictures of) the flags shown for Alpha Chi Omega and Tri-Sigma before. |
